If you think outside mathmatics then 0+0=0 because the first 0 meets the second, but both being 0's they only stay that way.

The way I look at it, zero is something that represents nothing.

Not that it's remotely valid to make use of such a metaphor but, essentially, I'd say you're correct here. However, the significant factor here is how one defines 'exist'.
As all tautologies are, though valid, this is pointless.
