Well, they were studying Neanderthals too. I would imagine that the DNA of neanderthals is incomplete, so any gene which they could recognize would be the subject of intense interest.

Also about whether or not Homo neanderthalensis is, in fact, Homo sapiens neanderthalensis, thus allowing interbreeding to have occurred.
