In almost every culture there have been smart people that have worked to gain knowledge in every way possible, but it was only until recently, when the oppression of religious authority on scientific thought was lifted, that science began to thrive.

Gosh, I used to be a historian of science, but I can't remember that the muslims helped European science during the renaissance. Or are we talking about something else?
