Thats not the only definition, sociologically:

Cult typically refers to a cohesive social group devoted to beliefs or practices that the surrounding population considers to be outside the mainstream, with a notably positive or negative popular perception.

Fair enough. But that is a social use, rather than a true definition. I agree that they both should get some play, but the question wasn't "What could we define, sociologically, as a cult?" The question was "Is Islam a Cult?" and I'm pretty sure they had the classic definition in mind.
