In God We Trust

In God We Trust on the currency is a daily reminder of their God. Without it you cannot buy or sell. Those that know some of the history of the great depression of the 30s may have some understanding of what happens when their god has been taken away. It has been said, that when the money is gone the love is gone also.

Complete and utter nonsense. The phrase was put on coinage and currency in the 1950s and had nothing to do with the Depression. Nor is there any evidence that there was "godlessness" running rampant in the time of the Depression. "In God We Trust" is a reminder of the theocratic intentions of many in a nation that was founded on principles of avoiding theocracy.

It should be stricken from currency since it implies that there is only room for one set of beliefs in a nation founded on the ideal that all should have a place and a say. And the phrase is a constant reminder of the very superstitious poppycock that may be the reason we fall drastically behind the rest of the world in technology and science.

I don't trust in god, I'm not aware of any convincing evidence for any god(s). I'd prefer it be removed from our currency, since the only fair position for the state is complete neutrality on the question.

In the interest of factual accuracy, having the motto on coins dates back to the nineteenth century.
The Congress passed the Act of April 22, 1864. This legislation changed the composition of the one-cent coin and authorized the minting of the two-cent coin. The Mint Director was directed to develop the designs for these coins for final approval of the Secretary. IN GOD WE TRUST first appeared on the 1864 two-cent coin.

So I was smoking a cigarette and happened to look down and spy a nickle. It was one of the newer mints (2006) and the design had caught my eye. I looked at it for a bit then read the words around the radius of the coin, opposite of Thomas Jefferson's profile:

IN GOD WE TRUST
Liberty

'How profound' I thought. 'Is there any better statement of faith than that?'

an oservation of the human race, that has been part of the human condition since the dawn of time...maybe???

Yes the phrase dates back to then, but it was not consistently on all money printed and stamped until McCarthyism.
