I had a crazy idea...

Cool, thanks. I got the shielding thing probably 5th hand or something, so the usual law of Chinese whispers applied.

Yes, I know you dont glow in the dark when you've been irradiated, I meant it in a flippant manner.

I've got the perfect idea for you for a nuclear powered plane. Get the plane up in the air using a normal petrol engine, then accelerate it to hyper speed by throwing out nuclear bombs behind it and riding on the shock waves. Perfect for a quick nuclear blitz across a few continents but you'll need a really strong craft.

There's no law against that, is there??

Ye there kindof is a law against it.

And why the Dzerzhinsky? hes an asshole and a con-man.

it's called an orion craft, uses a mazazine of some thousand mini-nukes to blast like hell out of earth's atmosphere. Screw the petrol engine, this thing would actually be the closest thing we can currently get to a fusion-powered ship if thermonukes were used. of course, it's a nuclear exhaust trail, so launches would have to be done in antarctica, and far away from any penguins, because penguins are adorable, and as such, one of few animals we actually care to keep alive :D.

Assuming you could bribe the IAEA to allow you to launch a rocket that blasts the crap out of anything behind it, the logistics of getting people and material to the remote continent of antarctica would be taxing to say the least. but it'd make for a fun ride, riding a nuclear shock wave while sitting atop a massive stack of thermonuclear ordinance... all you'd need is a cowboy hat and a beer and you have the greatest American stereotype EVER.

Ever read the sci-fi novel "Footfall" (by Niven and Pournell iirc). A project Orion type craft (aka "Old Bang Bang" :D) plays a central role. Reasonably good desciption of an Orion. Not a bad read, and the science isn't too far out. Parts of it are very funny also.

When I first heard about Footfall, I knew I had to find a copy. Alien invader intelligent baby elephants with a lust for interstellar conquest, you just have to read something like that. :D

Seriously, the technical science is very good for a scifi. And it actually had me laughing out loud in places. One of my favorites was when the aliens start showing some movies pilfered from a video rental place to a group of human captives, wanting a explaination of what they were seeing. One of the prisoners, a Sunday school teacher type, about flips out. Yep, "Deep Throat" starring Linda Lovelace.;)

Anyway, if you like a good space opera that doesn't constantly insult you with impossible science, give it a read.

well im pretty sure you wont be able or allowed to put a nuclear reactor on a rc plane. how big are these planes anyways? You might want to look into ramjets or some kind of airboosters.

now that i've looked into it, a rocket is considered not amature if the thrust time is over 12 seconds or the thrust is over a certain limit. after that, you need FAA approval, mandatory insurance coverage, all sorts of fun beaurocratic stuff. not to mention all the paperwork that goes with nuclear componentry. but hey, if University of Queensland managed to launch a scramjet rocket to near-space altitudes and fire an experimental engine at over mach 7, a mid-altitude rocket plane shouldn't be a problem for a college. at least I hope.

Ha, ha, ha, ha, pig eating sucker!!!!!!!!! :) : _ : / : ( : L : + : < : > : ! : # : @ ? %

O.M.G. I’VE JUST DISCOVERED THE ART OF THE SHIFT KEY!!!! THE FUCKING ADOM BOMB HAS NOTHING ON THIS! NOW WATCH ME DESTROY MILLIONS (maybe billions) AROUND THE WORLD! Aiming for America and Russia, let’s see if they can get through this one! Maybe India too and China, Japan maybe the African nations oww no they have too much to worry about, aids is killing them already.
