How to make yourself vomit!

I once tried that, I had a virus or something and felt sick but couldn't actually vomit. I retched, but didn't puke.

Have someone punch you hard in the gut?

Perhaps try what SAM said, the salt, but I would only do that as a last resort. If it doesn't make you vomit you will now have ingested two poisons..

You don’t. :bugeye:

As has already been said, current advice for poisoning is not to induce vomiting before you have consulted a poison control center.

Is that right? I think the general practice is to induce vomiting for all ingested poisons asap. Then check to see if more needs to be done

edit: you're right!

What NOT to do

Don't administer ipecac syrup or do anything to induce vomiting. In 2003, the American Academy of Pediatrics advised discarding ipecac in the home, saying there's no good evidence of effectiveness and that it can do more harm than good.

A tablespoon is about three teaspoons, but few people are that accurate with either one even when not under pressure.

The layman speculates on medical matters:

My guess is that induced vomiting would be a good idea in cases where

the ingested poison was not destructive to the esophagus or dangerous to the eyes, teeth, etc,

and the risk of aspiration compared to the risk of the poisoning was not too high (the risk of the poisoning depending on how fast you can get to the doc compared with how long it takes you to induce vomiting, for example)

and the poison was so recently swallowed that a significant amount of it could be evicted by vomiting.

Not an evaluation I would be comfortable making, if the hospital were less than say ten minutes away.

About half the poisonous stuff I have in the house carries labels specifically warning against induced vomiting - "If swallowed, DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING" is a typical phrase.

Why should you not induce vomiting? So long as it is not caustic, surely better to vomit?

Why would you inhale it? If you can induce yourself to vomit, you must be conscious.

You never choke on anything? Never get something - like a liquid you've got up your nose, as would typically happen during vomiting - down the wrong pipe?

Damned if I know, but there it is on the label, and they seem pretty sure of themselves. The common denominator seems to be petroleum distillates or compounds. Maybe they are especially dangerous to lungs? I know you don't want to get gasoline in your eyes.

Thing is, if I am going to be exposed to a poison, my stomach is my choice of site - it's tough, it's acidic, it's got capabilities. It's probably seen worse. If vomiting is a good response it will probably think of that on its own, eh?

I have choked, but usually while laughing or talking. Never choked on puke. I usually bend my head forward to puke. :)

Yes but your stomach is also made to absorb stuff.
