I don't see anything wrong with this. There are lots of reasons why someone might want to. If they felt that their dog had a perfect personality, one with identical DNA would probably be very similar, especially since dogs are highly social and pick up the traits of the other members of their "pack."
As for the argument for getting a dog from a shelter, that's just great. However, that's not going to make a dent in America's stray population. Tens of millions of our people simply don't have their pets neutered, for reasons that I personally find somewhere on the range between stupid and cruel--and of course these are the same stupid, cruel assholes who let their pets run freely, copulating several times a year.
There are so many dogs in our shelters that if everybody took one home today, the shelters would then be merely crowded instead of overcrowded.
