Christians Complain About Christmas

Does it really matter when Jesus was actually born? The important thing is what Christmas symbolizes. We're not celebrating some archaeological find here. It's a spiritual celebration.

I think the complaint is whether you can actually justify a "Christmas" without the "Christ".

Does it matter that Columbus' "find" eventually caused the massacre of the Indians? The important thing is that he laid the first stone in building a great country. We don't celebrate Columbus Day to mourn the subsequent Indian annihilations. We celebrate it for the US of A.

Now what would the Native Americans say?

[Note to anal-retentive readers: points have been exaggerated for effect.]

Not many people doubt that Columbus actually found anything, so there is enough reason to celebrate this find. And, like the date of December 25th, the who and when becomes almost irrelevant in light of the cause. It is the result that is celebrated, physical or spiritual. The Native Americans have been celebrating their country's existence for ages -- by respecting it, and living in it. I'm sure that they understand better than any why foreigners would celebrate finding something they always knew was great. They might wonder why people would celebrate something they took great pleasure in destroying, but then again, it's not their country anymore, is it?
