Cats

Cats are like philosophers. They're calm and keep to their business.
When one of my previous kitties was growing up, he often sat on the edge of the sink, watching drops of water. I watched the water with him. This went on for a few weeks, untill he began to drink from the sink. Amazingly smart.

I dislike perky dogs. I dislike perky humans, too. Dogs are too loud, talk too much. Cats match me well. You can gaze into a cat's eyes for hours and silently philosophise with him. Can't do that with a perky dog.

Yeah well I've seen an undignified cat. He was the biggest loser cat ever.

Somebody gave him to my sister when he was a kitten. He had some incurable virus that caused him to sneeze huge amounts of dark green sticky snot out of his nose, and it would fly in air until it hit a wall, where it would stay until somebody cleaned it up. But first he'd "Ah-Ah-Ahhh" before he "Chooed", so we all knew it was coming and would clear the room.

He also didn't "meow" properly. He'd go "w-me-w-o-m-w", but never quite the right order of sounds to produce the "meow".

But I think all cats are unevolved self-absorbed losers, snot or no snot, meow or no.

"Finally (I better ask a question!): has anyone ever seen a cat with a cold? If they have a blocked up nose, do they breath through their mouth then?"

Some of our cats have a cold at the moment. Normally this just lasts a day or two but one of our Maine Coons has an immune deficiency so it hits him much harder - lasts for days. He has Becotide 50 twice a day through a "Babyhaler" which is normally no problem. With his cold he seems very reluctant to breathe through his mouth.

We have 4 Maine Coons (including one Grand Premier) 9 Norwegian Forest Cats (including 2 Premiers) and 3 Moggies. For those who don't show cats a Premier is the neuter version of Champion.

Also, houses where cats live generally smell awful, no matter what the owners think -- they just get used to the nasty stench.

Also, cats are incredibly intrusive. My neighbours' idiot cats hang out in my back yard, have killed two blue jays and a cardinal, take dumps among my veggies and salad greens, dig up my plants and mulch...

If it were up to me, all cats would be catapulted into the sun.

Ailurophilia is the "love of cats."

The nose pad of a cat is ridged in a pattern that is unique, just like the fingerprint of a human.

There are more than 500 million domestic cats in the world, with 33 different breeds.

The American cat population reached nearly 68 million in 1996. American Demographics magazine estimates that's about 200 million kitty yawns per hour and a whopping 425 million catnaps each day!

A cat's heart beats twice as fast as a human heart, at 110 to 140 beats per minute.

25% of cat owners blow dry their cats hair after a bath.

The largest cat breed is the Ragdoll. Males weigh twelve to twenty pounds, with females weighing ten to fifteen pounds. The smallest cat breed is the Singapura. Males weigh about six pounds while females weigh about four pounds.

Calico cats are almost always female.

If your cat is near you, and her tail is quivering, this is the greatest expression of love your cat can give you. If her tail starts thrashing, her mood has changed --- Time to distance yourself from her.

Cats wag their tails when it is in a stage of conflict. The cat wants to do two things at once, but each impulse blocks the other. For example: If your cat is in the doorway wanting to go outside, and you open the door to find it raining, the cat's tail will wag because of internal conflict. The cat wants to go outside, but doesn't want to go into the rain. Once the cat makes a decision and either returns to the house or leaves into the rain, the tail will immediately stop wagging.

Don't pick a kitten or a cat up by the scruff of its neck; only mother cats can do this safely, and only with their kittens.

Cats knead with their paws when they're happy.

Your cat loves you and can "read" your moods. If you're sad or under stress, you may also notice a difference in your cat's behavior.

The domestic cat is the only cat species able to hold its tail vertically while walking. All wild cats hold their tails horizontally or tucked between their legs while walking.

An average cat has 1-8 kittens per litter, and 2-3 litters per year.

During her productive life, one female cat could have more than 100 kittens.

In 1952, a Texas Tabby named Dusty set the record by having more than 420 kittens before having her last litter at age 18.

The largest known litter (with all surviving) was that of a Persian in South Africa named Bluebell. Bluebell gave birth to 14 kittens in one litter!

A single pair of cats and their kittens can produce as many as 420,000 kittens in just 7 years.

More than 35,000 kittens are born in the U.S. each year. Spay or neuter your cat.

Cats have 290 bones in their bodies, and 517 muscles.

A cat has five more vertebrae in her spinal column than her human does.

There are three body types for a cat. Cobby type is a compact body, deep chest, short legs and broad head. The eyes are large and round. Muscular type is a sturdy body and round, full-cheeked head. Foreign type is a slender body, with long legs and a long tail. The head is wedge-shaped, with tall ears and slanting eyes.

Sir Isaac Newton, discoverer of the principles of gravity, also invented the cat door.

A cat will amost never "meow" at another cat. This sound is reserved for humans.

Know how old your cat really is. If your cat is 3, your cat is 21 in human years. If your cat is 8, your cat is 40 in human years. If your cat is 14, your cat is 70 in human years.

Naturally that has the word "ail" in it.

500 million more reasons to be annoyed.

It's not enough to know that cats are self-involved snots. We also need to know how many times they yawn and nap per hour.

The other 75% actually have stuff to do.

So if you put Ragdolls on a train travelling at 300,000 km/second at 4:40 Eastern Standard Time departing from Greenwich, and put Singapuras in a blender at 4:39 EST in Kalamazoo, and consider the Earth's rotation, which breed will become extinct faster?

Exactly. She's about to dump a load, and that's as loving as she's gonna get.

Yeah. It'll seem happier.

And so the domestic cat is the only species that exposes its asshole to you as it walks away?

Yay. That's 100 more assholes to look at.

K, what about spaying and neutering my neighbours' cats? And is catapulting them into the sun considered spaying or neutering?

:D

In this regard, cats are similar to the smaller dog breeds. You can safely pick them up by using one hand on the scruff of their neck and the other hand on their tail. That divides the body weight just about in half, and both of those parts are quite capable of holding up half the body weight routinely, without strain or discomfort. In fact, the security and authority of being held firmly in two places tends to make the animal calm. It's a good way to stop a fight.

We've been picking up cats and small dogs like Maltese and Lhasa Apsos that way for forty years. All breeders do. It's not at all hard on them and it can come in very handy. Lhasa Apsos tend to start brawls for absolutely no reason except the fact that they're almost all alphas. It's handy to be able to pick up the toughest ones and toss them onto the carpet in the next room before they do any damage.

Here's a pic of some expensive cats that Demunlady wanted to buy. The one she ended up getting is just like the orange one. Well worth the 6 months' pay, I'm sure.

(Yes, we stretched the ears out a tiny bit -- you know, CG-enhanced aging so she could see what they'd look like in a year.)
