Can I ask the muslims here what they would consider as appropriate clothing just out of curiousity?

It is always culture that mingle with religion and that is why you see diverse customs regarding the hijab or the niqab.

The standard dress as required by Islam is for women to cover their hair and to dress modestly as explained in my above answer.
