As far as "educating" the guy, what they're trying to do is get him to like certain people. You can't force someone to like someone else. Maybe he has his own reasons for not liking black people. We're all a little prejudiced based on our own experiences. It's just a question of whether or not we keep those prejudices to ourselves or give them voice. We just have to accept the fact that not everyone likes everyone else, for whatever reason. They should have just applied the law, left the church out of it, and moved on with life. If he wants to appreciate "black culture", he'll find his own way, and it will be a more rewarding experience.

I'm sure either myself or somebody else has given you a brief history of Haiti before. Did you forget? Haiti has been ruled by a succession of dictators in the last century. It has suffered a number of environmental problems. Go back just a little and you'll find that Haiti was initially more prosperous than its immediate neighbour (Dominican Republic?). Right now, it is not. Yet the racial makeup of each country in terms of black vs. white is approximately the same, if I recall correctly.

Incarceration

• Between 1980 and 2003 the US incarceration rate more than tripled, from 139 to 482 per 100,000, and the number of prisoners increased from 320,000 to 1.39 million.

• Blacks are seven times more likely to be in prison than whites. Hispanics are three times more likely.
