When I saw the thread title, Neutral Milk Hotel and Toad the Wet Sprocket were the first names that popped into my head. Also Chumbawumba, Limp Bizkit, and Squirrel Nut Zippers. And yes Mott the Hoople.

NMH were pretty good. Either because or in spite of their front man's chronic alcoholism and mental health roller coaster.
