In fact, religion is a strong as ever in Russia. Banning things just makes people want them more, or toughens their resolve to keep them going.

I think part of the current fundamentalist hysteria is is that outside of the Bible belt, a critical mass of people are no longer taking faith extremely seriously and have accepted that other religions are ok.
Besides that, have you ever met any Unitarian Universalists? UUers are great big flaming lefties. There is such a thing as a progressive Christian, a progressive Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Jew...

You don't need to ban superstition. What you do need to do is invest money in teaching children to think sceptically and increase their knowledge regarding the history of major religions (or lack there of).
Most modern religion (minus perhaps Buddhism) is pretty silly when you boil it down to it's components: Magic Sky Daddy, Magic Book, Magic Prophet/Messiah, Heaven (Carrot), Hell (Stick).

I don't know if I can handle Michigan style winters any longer. Having lived under a temperate climate for so a few years I just don't handle arctic hellish winters :shrug:

That's not possible, it is however, possible to educate children, you know, give them a fighting chance. Then, if they decide to worship "The" Sky Daddy Prophet, well, the world needs them sum ditches. So, a win win

No, I think we should teach children to think skeptically. The History (or lack there of) will take care of the rest. At least for those who gravitate towards rational thought and truth seeking. As for the rest, well, we do needs our ditches dug
