Australia screws with cigarette makers

I really don't give a fuck about tobacco companies. If this stops a few kids from taking up smoking then I'm all for it. Some of the poorest people on the planet waste a fortune on this garbage, so, fuck the tobacco sellers.

That's crap. It comes down to individual responsibility. People are going to smoke if they want to. I've been smoking for a decade, I've watched as prices literally quadroupled. And I've watched my grandmother suffer and eventually die from cancer, from smoking.

Do people really think that posting pictures on packs is going to convince me not to smoke? I started smoking knowing full well what the risks were because I watched my grandmother. But guess what? I just don't give a shit. I enjoy smoking. If I want to quit one day, I'll quit. But for now, it's a risk I'm willing to take. I know what my fate will hold if I continue. I'm not dumb, deaf, or blind. I know I will likely die from smoking. Got it. And yet I continue anyway. Why? I enjoy it and it's my choice to do with whatever my body whatever I want.

Why single out tobacco? How about alcohol, coffein, or sugar?? You want to see candies wrapped in a picture of roting teeth??

In big enough quantity, everything is harmful...

Not very many other things are as addicting as tobacco. While everybody needs to eat, it's much easier to change your eating habits if you if you are aware of the harm they may do. As it stands now I have to be able to read the fine print then decide how much of it I can safely eat. So for food, better labeling is a very good thing. But for addictive substances that cause harm, that's a no brainer, it needs to be banned and those people that make it and deal in it need to be put away with the rest of the drug dealers.

Thanks for the tax $$$, more fool you.

The thread is about the tobacco industry, so I'm sticking with that. You wanna discuss junk food, etc, I'm sure there are other threads.

This! Thank you.

The new labels will not deter the current smokers but it will make it more difficult for young people to purchase this product that will (not maybe) prematurely end their lives.

Understood, but you still don't have a valid argument why other possibly harmful but LEGAL products shouldn't be treated the same way. If the government wants to outlaw it, fine, just do it. But if it is legal, stop this picture nonsense, or treat other products the same...

More Americans die because of bad eating habits than tobacco usage, so let's start with food products....

If he gets sick and gets treatment for decades using government money, he is going to take more money out of the system than what he paid in by higher tobacco taxes. Just think about that for a while...

Full disclosure: the disgusting ads on TV that aired during Mets games played a large role in my quitting after 14 years. It may not work for you, but it does work for others. It's not that people don't know what it can do, it's that most people don't actually see what it does. These ads show you that.

So now that you've been defeated in an argument with me, rather than take on board what you've learned, you're just going to begin the discussion again with someone else, regurgitating the same failed argument that got you trounced last time around?

Stop pretending you don't see the difference between tobacco and other vices. Feigning ignorance is dishonest. You know full well why cigarettes are being subjected to this treatment and nothing else is.
