This is a simple grassroots discussion on the subject: Are UFO's a real phenomenon, or are they nothing but a series of tall tales?

For thousands of years, UFO's have been a part of mankind's experience. Images of bizzar objects in the sky have been in mankind's recorded history since the invention of cave art. UFO's have been seen by not just quiet country folk, but by some of the most famous and powerful people of this planet all this time. The phenomenon has been witnessed by anyone with eyes and is in the right place, and has no real pattern as to who it is seen by. Native American's have legends reguarding dancing lights in the skies. The Bible has a UFO sighting in it as well. It seems that UFO's are just a part of the human existance, but the question of what UFO's are is far from settled.

One of the most well known historical UFO sightings known is presented in the Bible. The Book of Ezekiel is perhaps one of it's most unusal books.

And I looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness [was] about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire. Also out of the midst thereof [came] the likeness of four living creatures. And this [was] their appearance; they had the likeness of a man. And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings. And their feet [were] straight feet; and the sole of their feet [was] like the sole of a calf's foot: and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass. And [they had] the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides; and they four had their faces and their wings. Their wings [were] joined one to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward. As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle. Thus [were] their faces: and their wings [were] stretched upward; two [wings] of every one [were] joined one to another, and two covered their bodies. And they went every one straight forward: whither the spirit was to go, they went; [and] they turned not when they went. As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance [was] like burning coals of fire, [and] like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning. And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning. Now as I beheld the living creatures, behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures, with his four faces. The appearance of the wheels and their work [was] like unto the colour of a beryl: and they four had one likeness: and their appearance and their work [was] as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel. When they went, they went upon their four sides: [and] they turned not when they went. As for their rings, they were so high that they were dreadful; and their rings [were] full of eyes round about them four. And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them: and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up. Whithersoever the spirit was to go, they went, thither [was their] spirit to go; and the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature [was] in the wheels. When those went, [these] went; and when those stood, [these] stood; and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature [was] in the wheels. And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature [was] as the colour of the terrible crystal, stretched forth over their heads above. And under the firmament [were] their wings straight, the one toward the other: every one had two, which covered on this side, and every one had two, which covered on that side, their bodies. And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great waters, as the voice of the Almighty, the voice of speech, as the noise of an host: when they stood, they let down their wings.
Ezekiel - Chapter 1 (King James Version)

Though skewed with riddles, it seems clear that the biblical profit Ezekiel saw something unusual in the sky - a bright object, possibly of golden color and saucer shaped, with multiple features jetting from it. His words are difficult to fathom, but it is clear that he did not see an object which was typical for the daily life of a Jew in Israel. Some people consider this to be the first recorded UFO sighting in written history.

Other historical cases are much easier to grasp, such as the mysterious "ghost" lights of Marfa Texas, a small town roughly 100 miles South-East of El Paso, Texas and in the vincenity of Alpine and Fort Davis, Texas, and the McDonald Observatory, one of North America's greatest and home to some of the world's most powerful telescopes. Just South of Marfa, every few evenings after dusk, mysterious lights appear in the sky. Though skeptics have attempted to debunk them as car-lights and other phenomenon, the legend refuses to die. Native Americans legends indicate that the phenomenon is thousands of years old, and locals have seem them ever since 1833, when the first white settlers arrived. Though perhaps this phenomenon is less exotic than many other UFO's, it is nonetheless a mystery that even modern science has yet to unravel.

UFO's have appeared in midevil fresco paintings, ancient cave art, and other historic artwork. Several midevil frescos include flying vehicles, some with persons inside them. 7,000 year old Mexican cave art depics dome shaped objects floating in the skies with people below them reaching up to them. One of the most interesting frescos depicts a flying egg-shaped vehilce with a pilot inside it.

In modern times, UFO's have been around throught American history. Even before Kenneth Arnold and his flying vehicle, World War II pilots on both sides described formations of aircraft known as "Foo-Fighters". Both sides assumed that they were in fact aircraft from opposint forces, but after World War II, some of the sightings have been cross-corroborated as not belonging to either Allied or Axis units. Even before World War II, in the 1800's their was a great wave of "airship" sightings in America.

Of course UFOs are a real phenomenon. That is, we are surely lumping several phenomenon under the UFO label.

Of course they are real!

I can still remember the night ... Oh ... Oh! ... Ooooh!

Sorry, it's still ... so vivid.

Theres nothing to talk about, the truth is out and we are not alone

For the most part I think they can be rationally explained as hoaxes or misconceptions by the people who report them. BUT, there are rare circumstances that prove conclusively that something totally unexplained occured. The components to these are simple:

  • At least a dozen witnesses, preferably in the hundreds
  • Video, preferably from different locations
  • Solid evidence, i.e radiation exposure

Two of these things happened in Mexico City, when they were celabrating their independence a UFO appeared in the sky and was witnessed by none other than the whole populace of the city and filmed from many different locations. They could see the UFO because I believe it remained in the general area for a good deal of time.

So, in conclusion, they do exist, but we can't conclusively say what they are.

And Egyptians worshiped Ra until someone found out it was only the sun.

Egyptians? ...

Hell, I still do!

Matter of fact, Ra decides whether on not I have an
omelette or sunny-side-up on Sunday mornings.

Nothing like sunny-side-up in a sunbeam. ;)

UFO's, as in unidentified flying objects are of course real, since the phenomena is occuring. Then there can always be the question of how many experienced this phenomena and can the object be identified and taken out of the UFO category. Many identifications can be made, all varying in a range from weatherballons, alien spacecrafts, time machines to an insect in your eye or a brain tumour even.

governments are definitely buttering up the public with films such as independance day, mars attacks, men in black especially etc etc

UFOs spotted hovering over Beijing

Residents in a Chinese city contacted local media to report UFOs hovering in the sky.

The four UFOs surrounded by a bright yellow light were spotted flying over Beijing.

They were reportedly flying at a height of 10 kilometres and moving in pairs.

The Shanghai Star quotes the Beijing Times as saying they appeared on Monday evening for around an hour.

However, the Beijing Planetarium says it has not been proved that UFOs exist.

Lan Songzhu, engineer of Xinglong Observation Station of Beijing Astronomical Observatory, says there have been more than 10,000 recorded UFO sightings in the last 100 years.

He says about 95% of these sightings have been shown to be related to astronomy, the atmosphere or the global magnetic field.

Scientist to probe UFO ‘conspiracy’

A LEADING scientist will tomorrow question one of the biggest UFO conspiracy theories of all time.

Professor Don Kurtz, an astrophysicist from the University of Central Lancashire, will argue the so-called Roswell incident was triggered by a downed American spy balloon, rather than a crashed flying saucer.

The professor will discuss eye-witness accounts of wreckage found at the site in New Mexico, and argue that the American military was in fact attempting to cover up its own top-secret spy balloon programme.

He will also pour doubt on other supernatural phenomena, including crop circles and the Bermuda Triangle.

Professor Kurtz said: "In some ways, UFOs are a bit like Nessie - people are intrigued and it’s difficult to prove the absence of something, but there just isn’t enough evidence to support the idea.

"A lot of people think that scientists don’t like the idea of aliens existing, but that’s not true. We’d love it if aliens were visiting Earth.

"That would be the most important discovery of all time."

He would be singing a different tune if his uncle would have been called to the crash site that afternoon!

"I see light..."
*minutes later*
"Hey, get that thing away from my bum!"

:D

Random, useless trivia: The largest concentration of UFO sightings is in Scotland. America gets a larger number, but it's about number and land size. (If Captain Crunch is reading this...) :D

Crunch seems to be one that would see green men sharing his lucky charms in the morning with him...

Maybe Scotland's already been taken over by aliens! I mean, look at haggis! :D

1 sheep's pluck (stomach bag)
2 lb. dry oatmeal
1 lb. suet
1 lb. lamb's liver
2 1/2 cups stock
1 large chopped onion
1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper, Jamaica pepper and salt

(Wait, actually, haggis sounds kind of good...:bugeye: :D )

From an interview with the National Enquirer on 14 Jan. 1997...
Ah yes, when reputation counts...

And the rest? No references, no sources - it's just some guy's webpage.

Peace.

World War II pilots on both sides described formations of aircraft known as "Foo-Fighters".

On the other hand, UFO history is riddled with revived legends. Unfortunately people love mysteries a little too much, and even thouroughly debunked stories seem to keep resurfacing.

Foo fighters were not craft, they were luminicent balls appearing at wingtips or trailing edges of wings or other parts of airplanes. They were suspected by both sides to be the other side's secret weapon of some sort, but in the end they turned out to be discharges of static electricity. The plane builds up an electric charge as it speeds through the air (cars do too), and in the right conditions, you get the foo-fighter phenomenon.

Sooo why were they only seen during WW2? Well, the same question would be valid for UFOs as well, but there is a simple explanation. Before the war, only few fast, all-metal planes existed, and they rarely flew over long distance under blackout conditions. So no "foo fighters" happened to be seen.

After WW2, all planes got equipped with static dischargers (thats those short bits of wires you may have seen hanging from trailing edges here and there), and thus "foo fighters" were never seen again. -- well actually, they have: Occasionally, planes flying through thunderstorms still report he phenomenon, but now pilots know what it is.
