Well yes, but there was a lot more involved. Hypatia was branded by Cyril as an "atheist witch" and on his orders was killed by a mob of religious "monks". Hypatia was beloved by the people of Alexandria at the height of its cultural influence. She was no mere "pesky female", she was a great teacher and cultural force.It was probably more about getting rid of a pesky female that inadvertently showed they were no more than ignorant sex starved crazy arogant and ineffectual males neither at home with real men nor real females.

He also practised religious "cleansing".
For his participation and efforts Cyril was canonized by the Church as reward.
This example of pure evil creates a grotesque image in my mind of how deep rationalization for committing heinous acts in the name of a greater Authority can run. It;s scary.
