Self-Same
They walked on, more aware now and then,
Soon encountering a young man walking toward them.
“He looks just like you, though he’s much younger.”
“Ho, it is me! It is my younger self, so eager.”
“How do you know this, sage?”
“Because, once, when I was his age,
I met my older self, one of adage,
Although I didn’t believe anything
That he told me at that time being.
I was stubborn, I just wouldn’t give my ear,
Even though he knew my name, my nature,
My history, and my future.”
“Well, here comes your younger self
Walking up to us, looking like an elf.”
As they passed on the trail,
The older self said to his younger self,
“Hello, my younger-self-same!
Do you know my name?”
Said the younger self, “I know you not!”
“I told you; he doesn’t know me; rot.”
“Well, at least you’re older and wiser now than him.”
They soon encountered a very old man, thin,
Walking quite happily toward them.
“He looks just like you,
Although he’s much older than you.”
“It is me, of course. He is my older self!”
“How do you know this, elf?”
“I just have a feeling how.
Remember, I am wiser now.”
As they passed on the trail, and bowed,
The older self said to the younger self,
“Hello, my younger-self-same!
Do you know my name?”
Said the younger self,
“I know you, yes, as myself,
I know you very well—your name;
You’re my older selfsame!”
The old man passed them twice,
And walked on, in rejoice:
“He knows me, and my voice!”
They could hear him saying this
Over and over to himself, in bliss.
