PARIS — President Barack Obama, who vowed to revive the Arab-Israeli peace process at the start of his term, has begun with a direct and public challenge to Israel’s latest plan to build new settlements in East Jerusalem.

It’s a risky move that has already provoked a sharp rebuke from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. But it is hard to see how the peace process could move forward if Washington had remained silent.

Mr. Obama picked a small but symbolic issue, a 20-unit housing project on the site of the former Shepherd Hotel, sparking a full-blown diplomatic standoff. Just days after the United States objected to the project, the European Union, Russia and France did the same.

This gambit puts the settlement issue at the center of the table, even before the next round of Arab-Israeli negotiations starts — if it ever does. The downside is that it might only serve to harden Israel’s stance, without softening Arab positions.

The stalemate in the Middle East needs a new approach. By opening the most sensitive dossier first, Mr. Obama has delivered to Israel its first dose of tough love since the administration of President George H.W. Bush.

By the way, Iranians aren't arabs...

Yes, my friend. Persians. Iran is and influential member of the ME/Oil gang. The fact that it is an observer on the SCO, is an indication of its value, politically and economically, to the big SCO members. China, Russia and India. This is fast becoming not only a counter balance to NATO, but a real threat. Essentially a response to the dollar hegemony and NATO expansion into Eastern Europe.

Not so powerful.

So? Belgium is hardly a powerful country.

No, but it is part of NATO, which is. A attack on ANY NATO member is an attack on NATO, and will be defended by NATO. Just as Iran will form part of the SCO and enjoy the protection thereof. The days of NATO hegemony are at an end.

Good observation and an accurate one.

Israel and deals with Palestinians:

The evacuation of two Palestinian families from the homes in the disputed East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah on Sunday drew a slew of condemnations.

The neighborhood was at the center of escalating tensions between Israel and the U.S. last month, when Israel's plan to build some 20 new apartments there was revealed. The U.S. has demanded that the project be halted, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said two weeks ago that "Israel will not agree to edicts of this kind in East Jerusalem."

The evacuation comes after a decision by the High Court of Justice last week, which ruled that the homes belong to Jewish families.

"Police arrived before dawn and cordoned off part of the Arab neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah before forcibly removing more than 50 people," said Chris Gunness, spokesman for the UN agency in charge of Palestinian refugees.

UN staff later saw vehicles bringing Jewish residents to occupy the homes, he said.

Assholes.

Israel and deals with Palestinians:

History repeats itself, but this the HYPOCRISY is unbelievable.

The evacuation of two Coloured families from the homes in the disputed Cape Town neighborhood of Newlands on Sunday drew a slew of condemnations.

The neighborhood was at the center of escalating tensions between South Africa and the U.S. last month, when South Africa`s plan to build some 20 new apartments there was revealed. The U.S. has demanded that the project be halted, but Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd said two weeks ago that "South Africa will not agree to edicts of this kind in Cape Town."

The evacuation comes after a decision by the High Court of Justice last week, which ruled that the homes belong to white South African families.

"Police arrived before dawn and cordoned off part of the coloured neighborhood of Newlands before forcibly removing more than 50 people," said Chris Gunness, spokesman for the UN agency in charge of Coloured refugees.

UN staff later saw vehicles bringing white residents to occupy the homes, he said.

Assholes.

And yet, people are waking up to their own personal hells:

“Therefore I, a 95 year old Sabra (native born Israeli Jew), who has plowed its fields, planted trees, built a house and fathered sons, grandsons and great-grandsons, and also shed his blood in the battle for the founding of the State of Israel,

“Declare herewith that I renounce my belief in the Zionism which has failed, that I shall not be loyal to the Jewish fascist state and its mad visions, that I shall not sing anymore its nationalist anthem, that I shall stand at attention only on the days of mourning for those fallen on both sides in the wars, and that I look with a broken heart at an Israel that is committing suicide and at the three generations of offspring that I have bred and raised in it…

"Over all this there is waving the black flag of the frightening contempt for the life and blood of the Palestinians. Israel will never be forgiven for the terrible toll of blood spilt, and especially the blood of children, in hair-raising quantities.”

Hence, the holy war will continue.
