World Cup 2010 - one thread to rule them all

I watched part of a match last night on TV. The noise from the horns was non-stop. Irritating and distracting and just plain obnoxious.

Why do people in soccer crowds think it is about them and not about the soccer?

Ug, my latino neighbor's kids were blowing those things all day yesterday.

What did I tell you? Those noisemakers are the only interesting story surrounding the world cup:

JOHANNESBURG — The loud trumpets called vuvuzelas will continue to be allowed for the time being at the World Cup, despite complaints from some international broadcasters, players and fans, the tournament’s organizing committee said Monday.

They're fine - and funny, even - in moderation. But a host of them is a pain in the ass.

Truth...

Those horns are obnoxious. I heard they were thinking about banning them because they can cause permanent hearing damage, and because they're well... annoying as hell.

In any case, USA vs England match was pretty exciting. Went to the bar with a few of my buds to watch and didn't expect the place to be so packed. Apparently the World Cup is BIG in the United States this year. Apparently bars were packed just about everywhere.

They're annoying just watching the game on the television. I can only imagine what they're like in person.

Some pundits and bloggers actually in the stadiums have commented that the vuvuzelas are great, so go figure.
I don't find them any more annoying than the usual horns, drums, etc.

Anybody fancy North Korea to upset Brazil?

Piss off. One fucking lucky shot. One.

And - although I appreciate the innate American confusion in math - 1-1 is a TIE, not a bloody WIN. FFS.

Doesn't matter. All your divisions are ours.

Eh, there's a reason they called it a win. England was heavily favored in that match. For us to have gotten a tie, gift meatball goal or not, was a huge upset.

C'mon you want us to win the world cup anyway, it'll help make the sport popular over here hehehe :D

What's really clear reading this thread is that aren't many Poms on the forum at the moment. If there were they'd be all over it.
The Cloggies did well Enmos but lacked a little x factor without Arjen Robben (? spelling).
I only saw the first half of Cote D'ivoire vs. Portugal, great looking game, by far the best so far. Cote D'ivoire played like Australia used to, heaps of intent and pressure on every ball. With Drogba back in they'll be very hard to stop.
Portugal look solid but Ronaldo can't seem to score (it could become a hoodoo).

Am I the only Brit (half Pom)...? I doubt it. I reckon the Germany game is the best so far.

Anyway, WOW, the Honduras keeper pulled off the save of the tournament so far...

Is it wrong to cheer for the immolation of Team USA?

Oh I love an upset!! Well done the Swiss, one ugly goal can even beat the 2nd best team in the world.

I had a feeling the Swiss would get a draw, but a win! Honduras are in for a beating from Spain me thinks.

So looking like Brazil vs Spain in the next round. Had that down as being the most likely final.

Not many goals going in this year either, and generally it's all been a bit boring with a fairly low standard of football.
I guess that's to be expected though when you look at some of the teams compared to ones that are missing. Pity the big teams are playing just as bad though.

I reckon the Germany game is the best so far.

for people from england, brazil, spain, netherlands, portugal, ... this must have been a disappointing and boring start into the games. for me, that´s quite a reason to feel joy .... our game was so wonderful to view :)

time for some fun : what does somebody from england do, when his country is world champion? he´ll turn his playstation off and go to bed :p

Hahahahaha! What's the difference between the English and German National Teams?

The English can beat the Scots.
