World Cup 2010 - one thread to rule them all

You do realise that Americans came from all over the world don't you?

My point is this. If I were the king of England sitting around I would say "man this shit sucks, America's pretty cool...maybe I should call him and ask if I can join him". The same goes true for the king of Canada, Russia and France.

But I have a question to you, did you know you can get viagra over the phone? If you don't have a mobile phone I can find yo ua great price on the new motorola Q at only 270 each. THATS BETTER THAN WHOLESALE!!

Anyway...

I thought The Netherlands were not doing that well against Uruguay. But now Germany played an almost identical match against them (not just the score).

Enjoyed the 3rd/4th place play-off although not the result i was hoping. Anyhoo, looking forward to a damn good final on Sunday as the matches previously haven't lived up to my expectations.

Well, lets hope so. I fear The Netherlands will be a bit too light for Spain though.

What the hell dude. Canada is in the British Commonwealth first of all, so the Queen of England is the monarch of Canada. Russia abolished Tzar during the Communist Revolution. France doesn't have a King anymore as well.....

Agreed, spain have far too many big guns who will be up for this one. But i'm always a supporter of the under dog and always had a soft spot for the Dutch...and a huge supporter of GOAL LINE TECHNOLOGY!!!

There is only one way destiny can be changed for Holland to win. The Lost Golden Jar of Soy Sauce must be recovered from the depths of the river Rhine, and in this soy sauce must the octopus be pan-fried and then consumed.

Well.. You don't have to watch it, do you?
Look, barring a mild snark or two I was going to pass on this action. Really. Dumping on someone else's party is no attractive motive, and I would never have heard "Bolero" played by an orchestra of vuvuzelas without this one - I would never have been able to even dream of what I had missed. If that is what sport looks like to Brazilians, may they have a good time and my blessing goes with them - hopefully, back to Brazil.

I wasn't watching it. I was watching baseball. I was watching baseball because I wanted to see amazing feats of skill and fierce competition between teams of athletes. And because I did not want to see referees suckered by opera-level histrionics over stubbed toes, minor trips and falls, undelivered slaps or eye-pokes, and imaginary touchings of the shin by a rubber cleat.

I wanted to watch adult men, who can foul a 95mph fastball off of their instep and walk it off in a few seconds with a straight face and some dignity.

It's bad enough hockey started holding shootouts - hockey isn't my sport, and its soccerization hardly registers. When baseball players start diving like soccer players, and it works, then sputter damn sputter damn sput.

I used to play baseball and was a pretty huge fan as a kid, but now I'm just disturbed by the fact that guys like Kirby Puckett and Cecil Fielder were able to sport gigantic beer guts and still excel at the game. I like sports where top-level fitness is required in order to stay competitive.

That's what meritocracy gets you, with skill at a premium- wait a minute: you dissing Kirby Puckett's athletic ability? You have got to be kidding.

The World Series catch is at 1.03: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrhXXzzvbA8 He made more than a dozen catches like that, over a short career.

Meanwhile, I'm watching the best soccer players in the world miss a net the size of a bus from less than twenty feet away, and then trip on each other.

Classic soccer: tied at 0, and the announcers are blaming some guy who made a run at the goal and was blocked for not "going down" and thereby getting a foul in front of the net, to win the game.

They accuse him of trying for glory, staying up to get the goal rather than diving in front of the ref for the foul. It's apparently a recognized technique, the deciding factor in close matches. Either that or the "offsides" factor, in which superior play and beating the defender to striking position is a violation half the time, depending on the ref.

Again: to each their own - but soccerized baseball needs to be stepped on right now.

I can't decide which country I want to win in the Spain-Netherlands match because I decide which country I hate more. Spain, for using it's witchcraft to possess the octopus into choosing Spain which lead to the defeat of Germany. Or the Dutch, for obvious reasons and their wooden shoes.
