I say the original statement is true because once one tries to define something which they do not know, various answers will come. And when the subject is something so profound such as God, nobody wants to be wrong so lots of defensiveness will happen.

The problem with religious is that their followers are following someone else's beliefs rather than try and seek God. So they basically end up worshipping their prophet more than they do God. Study God, don't study the prophet.

I don't think the quote is about whether there is god or not.
More like, if we all believed in some god(s), that would bring us together; but since we all have different religions, we are divided.

The implied assumption was that a god exists and that one must answer on that basis.
