Why do people behave differently when in groups?

You know how some people, more often males, but can be girls/women too, can be quite sane when you talk to em on their own, but when in a group rapidly turn into morons?

I will readily admit to this behaviour myself, I have these 2 friends, who, if you talked to one of us on our own we'd be quite sane and mature, but when together we somehow regress about 10 years psychologically, swearing at each other, telling each other to 'eat poo' and 'go fuck your mom', making fart noises at each other, while laughing like 3 demented hyenas. None of that is meant seriously, it's just our way of relating. I couldn't tell you why.

Humans become more annoying in groups. I guess it's just because they can.. you know, they are with a lot of buddies.

But in my own case I don't do things because I feel I should, or that people would disapprove.

I guess like you said Enmos, people are more likely to feel that something is ok if others are doing it.

And who is going to tell them otherwise.. being in a group means they have the upper hand.

It's not that, I would never threaten anyone. It's more that I would feel 'validated' in doing something when in a group.

During my group therapy we all try to express ourselves openly so that we can get objective opinions of ourselves as well as constructive criticism as well. Groups are a very good thing that I attend. ;)

VI they are right, its a more localised form of mob mentality. Look at rioting, how many people would be willing to walk up to a random stranger, blow up there shop, there home, there car and then potentually behead them or hang them or whatever?

yet this sort of stuff is seen in rioting from time to time

I belive the theory is called "group conciousness" or "group morality"
partually this can be reinforced through fear, who would be willing to stand up in a riot, turn to them and say "no you cant do that, its not right"?

they are called idiots, that try to catch other peoples vibes.
to impress them or whatever pathetic reason.
especially when people are influenced by hollywood celebrities *barf*

"OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH, IS THAT MICHEAL PHELPS!...MICHEAL I SUCK YOUR DICK TO IMPRESS YOU, JUST SO YOU CAN USE ME!!!"

People feed off of each other in some cases.

Other times people wish to become a part of a or the group, perhaps out of fear of some sort of rejection or alienation.
And being among like-minded people can bring out a 'wilder' or more unrestrained side.

I wonder if this "group thingie" is the reason for the vast differences between city dwellers and good ol' country folks?

Or ...are those people different to begin with, then end up living with the "mobs in the city" or living out in the country to get away from the "mobs"?

Yea I guess that has to do with local culture and, of course, there are people from the city that move to the country because they like it more there.
