We got into space because the military of the USSR and the USA wanted to have a delivery method for the Atomic bomb that did not need a man to actually control it. And they only way they could do that was to use the Space program as a vehicle to do so. And after they got into space the science that was learned along the way discovered that we do live on a fragile planet and that planet will one day be no more. So now the push is for Travel between planets and eventually solar systems. All to look for a new place for humanity to hang its hat.
