What is the best science fiction or fantasy book???

Many great authors have been listed in here but, ill have to go with two great Bradbury works.

The Martian Chronicles and Fahrenheit 451

Time travel?

Try a little-known book by Isaac Asimov called "The End of Eternity". Probably out of print so it may be hard to find.

The setting is a bit dated, but it is by far the most fascinating science-fiction I have ever read about time travel. That topic is usually a hard one to cover, but Asimov does a great job in this story.

Someone has probably already mentioned these but the Heechee series by Frederic Pohl is a great read!

1 - Gateway
2 - Beyond the Blue Event Horizon
3 - Heechee Rendezvous
4 - The Annals of the Heechee
5 - The Gateway Trip

ROBB23...

A couple of other great stories by Bradbury...

"Dandelion Wine"
and
"Something Wicked This Way Comes"

Now for something completely different...

Sorry about the multiple posts - keep remembering others that I should have mentioned!

For a completly unique one-of-a-kind fantasy tale, somewhat in the direction of "Watership Down" - try "The Book of the Dun Cow" by Walter Wangerin.

Yeah, it's about roosters, cows and talking dogs... but give it a chance, you might be surprised. It's actually a fascinating allegory and once you start reading it is hard to put it down.

Read them both, great novels both in different ways.

I especially like how the Father in the 'Something Wicked This Way Comes" has the same chaotic thought process as me.:D

Have you read one of his more recent (if you can call something of its age recent) short story collection "The Toynbee Convector." The first few arent great, there not horrible but, not spectacular unlike majority of stories after those first few. Some of the greatest short stories EVER are in there.
