So I was at the book store today looking for a new book to read. Any suggestions? One of my favorite authors is R.A. Salvatore. I like those type of fantasy books. I would like to get into books along those same kind. (like the books from the forgotten realms series') Any thoughts?

Are those books single books or in a series??

Wes: How young were you? I am 21 yrs. old. Is the book like good reading for my age or is it for younger?

Prelude to Dune : House Atreides

Prelude to Dune : House Harkonnen

I think I was 14 when I read it, but I'd think it good at any age.

Lord Of The Rings... read The Hobbit then the rest, best Fantasy I have ever read.

The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant is an excellent series, written by Stephen R. Donaldson. Read the whole set I did in High School and loved it.

I am currently reading The Nomad of Time by Michael Moorcock, good quick Sci Fi read....

Hey cosmictraveler, did you know there is a fourth book in the Foundation series? Called Foundation's Edge... It's the only one I have, heheheee, need to get the others.

Go to a book store. See what you find. At least one book you take home should be The Hitchhiker's Guide, Anne McCaffrey, something from Heinlein, Allen Dean Foster, David Weber, Asimov, or maybe something one of these guys has said.

The prequels to the Dune series were simply dreadful if you ask me.

Anyone know if Clarke wrote any tasteful science fiction other than Space Odyssey?

if you like series, read the Mars ones by Kim Stanley Robinson, start with "Antarctica", ...

if you like ideas, read Robert Sawyer's stuff

or "Contact" by Carl Sagan (though slightly different both movie & book were great)

I have just finished ACORNA'S REBELS by Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough. Enjoyed it very much. You might want to start with ACORNA by McCaffrey and Margret Ball it is the first in the series.

My choice.
Try 'Consider Phlebas" by Iain Banks. This is the first of his novels about the "culture". It's a cool read.

Yes, he did, he has written loads. Whether its to the taste of many people is another matter, it tends towards the quiet and unexciting, with nice ideas thrown in and reasonable characters, and fairly hard scifi. Sorry I cant give you any names, my library is 250 miles away.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress (Heinlein)

Time Enough for Love (Heinlein)

The Left Hand of Darkness (LeGuin)

LoTR Trilogy

Thomas Covenant Trilogy (actually, both series)

Lesse.. i've got a bunch. Heh.

Douglas Adams' Hitchiker's Guide is probably one of the best, heck, the whole series is good... Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series, LoTR trilogy (the Hobbit is alright, though you should read it first.) I honestly think the Silmarrillion is even better than the trilogy, but i know people who read the first three pages and fall asleep, so it's a matter of taste.. If you really like Tolkien, read the silmarillion... The Acorna series is quite good, by Anne McCaffrey and some other authors... hmmm...

There's this one other book that was outstanding, can't remember the name though. T'was about this society of psychics in the future, basically a communism because everyone was set positions in society, and people who weren't psychics were executed.. There was a wall around this, and outside were the normal people that had survived a massacre, one of the psychics got stuck out there and ended up forming a friendship with this wild girl.. Gah. Anyone know what i'm talking about?
