Muhammad could easily be misunderstood if one counts the number of his wives. But one thing to have in mind is, he believed that he was the chosen Prophet and hence the best of the men at the time and place. Being compassionate at heart, he sincerely believed that the women he married got the best in this world and the other.
Once, when Umar went to Abu Bakr with a proposal to marry off Umar's daughter, Bakr politely declined. Next he went to Uthman who too politely refused. Muhammad called Umar and told him that not to worry and told him that his daughter will get the best of the men, Muhammad himself. Umar delighted hearing this.
If Muhammad was of low character he could have had most beautiful damsels around. But that was not the case if you look into case by case.
