Were ancestors of humans religious?

Anyone heard of any archaeological, or other, evidence supporting this?

Very little archeological evidence would survive that long. But it's unlikely, given studies of the brain casings of skull,s that human ancestors were that developed.

However, pareidolia- the basic mental effect that creates superstition was already a developed evolutionary trait.

So you might think they had a great capacity for it, although not the intellect to organize it in any thoughts more than "Weird unknown thing might eat me."(Not in the form of any kind of language, of course)
