We live in an amoral society..

Without conceptions of good and evil, combined with a sense of apathy.

Understand that amoral means that we don't have conceptions of good or evil, immoral means that we know what good and evil is, and we go against it.

Blindly following religious morals is not the key, because they too are flawed, an intelligent society knows when to be absolute and relative, our society/ humanity is too relative at the moment, with increasing individualistic tendencies.. leading to a blind faith in science.

So I propose the question,
Our society is what,
Amoral,
Immoral,
Moral
or
Simply apathetic ?
But isnt' the apathy a by product ?
 
It should be based upon laws that are set up as to what the society wants to insure its survival. Laws enacted that help evceryone not just the wealthy or poor.Laws that can change as society changes through an appeals process and laws that can be removed that aren''t any good.:)
 
there's elements of each, and its all subjective anyway. i don't have anything to say that isn't too big a generalisation, or something thats been repeated too many times.
 
Our societies are currently based on immorality.
Those who have a sense of morality, are being
herded into the amoral camp, by the the overwhelming
wave of immorality.
Moralness is being branded as old-fashioned, and weak,
and to ascociate with it is not cool (it's cool to be bad).
Religion, the discipline which keeps morality in check, has been
hijacked by the irreligious, making it very difficult to keep morals in check.
Eventually we will all become like the lower animals, but with an advanced conciousness.

My advice; buy a Bhagavad Gita, read and understand it as much as you can. :)

I don't know what country or society you have in mind, hence can't answer your question...

Morality is relative by the way...

I was talking about humanity in general..
See..

An intelligent person knows when to be absolute or relative, but our society seems bent on pushing it one way or another, and often at whimsical aims.
Hence, if one knows the right words, society can be manipulated.
 
Let me ask you back: Did humanity ever live in a moral society? or What societies do you consider to be moral?

So what ?

Because we have no examples to draw from, we should either be absolute or relatively moral ?
Isn't there a point where you draw the line and say, "Everything past this point is not debatable ? "
or " this is definitely good" and "this is bad/evil"?
I'm not arguing for an extreme, I'm arguing for moderation with some clearly defined areas.
Not "if you wear miniskirts you're immoral" .. which is one extreme, or "anything goes" which is another..

But some notion of good and evil has to exist.
 
Yes, the USA is a moral society. It has become more progressively moral since the two centuries ago, and even more progressively moral than when people were running around the continent in loincloths and spears. It is on its way to becoming more moral, as people's minds develop.
 
It is a shame that many have strong moral convictions bsed on bvad concepts.

It is also a shame that many seem to have strong moral convistgions, but are hypocrites who ignore their moral code when it is inconvenient or or costly in some manner.

I guarantee that if you unpack how an "intelligent society" precisely goes about this you will draw a picture of exactly what you dread in religion
 
The main problem with morality is the vast majority of people don't really care for it personally.
 
We are in a transformation period. The first time in the history, the concept of "human beings in planetary scale" has becoming the definitive norm for everyone. We have brought many different religion, tradition, ethics, fear, rituals from many different societies to the display . Some of them have affected and defined one another for a long period of time (such as Mediterranean wars between the East and the West ) while some others were isolated for a long time until recent centuries (Far Eastern cultures, ancient American cultures, or Aborigines).
Now, everything is staring each other. Nothing seems absolute or definitive for everyone, apart from science. Because science has nothing to do with any perception; it dictates numbers, experiment and research. It does not tell about good or bad. Dealing with science will eventually create its calm popular culture, if it has not started already.

Thoroughout history, each -voluntarily or involuntarily- isolated human cultures were convinced that their way of understanding this chaos and resulting moral perception were the wisest and the best among others. Simply because they did not know the others. Now they are all in the "hell of ideas" and they will reach some common rules, ethics and codes to regulate this happening. We will start to shape the scope and the meaning of this new society of which function should satisfy the human survival tradition in "wild" nature or unregulated universal occurance of things.
