Vatican Pope making some rather sickening suggestions

''Victims of clerical sex abuse have reacted furiously to Pope Benedict's claim yesterday that paedophilia wasn't considered an "absolute evil" as recently as the 1970s.

In his traditional Christmas address yesterday to cardinals and officials working in Rome, Pope Benedict XVI also claimed that child pornography was increasingly considered "normal" by society.

"In the 1970s, paedophilia was theorised as something fully in conformity with man and even with children," the Pope said.

"It was maintained - even within the realm of Catholic theology - that there is no such thing as evil in itself or good in itself. There is only a 'better than' and a 'worse than'. Nothing is good or bad in itself."

The Pope said abuse revelations in 2010 reached "an unimaginable dimension" which brought "humiliation" on the Church.

Asking how abuse exploded within the Church, the Pontiff called on senior clerics "to repair as much as possible the injustices that occurred" and to help victims heal through a better presentation of the Christian message.

"We cannot remain silent about the context of these times in which these events have come to light," he said, citing the growth of child pornography "that seems in some way to be considered more and more normal by society" he said. ''

It sounds like he's just covering his own ass. "Yes of course pedophilia is wrong, but you can't be too hard on my guys for doing it when it wasn't even an important concern out there in your world until recently."

Is there such a phrase as "praising with faint damnation?" That's what he's doing here.

It's not that pedophilia wasn't considered an "absolute evil" back in my day. It's just that the incidents were considered so vile that they were not always reported, and since reported cases were therefore rare, the laws had not been reviewed and strengthened: a vicious cycle. And also because of the underreporting, we had no idea how widespread it was--not just in churches but anywhere.

As for child pornography being considered normal, he's just completely full of shit. There is (arguably) more of it today because technology has made it easier to produce and distribute clandestinely. In addition, technology has made it easier to produce without actually using real children. But in order to prosecute people for producing or watching it, the laws need to be changed to cover the images specifically, rather than the circumstances in which the images were created. This raises some uncomfortable freedom-of-speech issues.

Exactly. This was my very first opinion when I read this article. He is simply trying to excuse decades, possibly hundreds of years of the vatican buggering boys.
