We spent more time fixing roads and escorting EOD and supply convoys than we did raiding anywhere. The grunts did a good bit of that though, so I guess it's an even trade

I assume you assume I joined for a living because of my joke in that other thread? (Or was it this one? Who knows.) I think Iraq is very bland, not too terribly colorful. They could really use some nice upholstery and spruce it up here and there. Anything specific you want to know about what I think of Iraq?

As someone coming from a (presumably) First World Background, what did you think about their outlook and attitudes?
I joined the Marines because I wanted to for a long time. But it's a lot more than that. I wanted to serve my country, protect our people (from all enemies, foreign and domestic, and from threats, direct or otherwise). Partly because my father is a Marine and he served from 71-73 in Vietnam. I wanted to make something of myself, the military and the Marines especially can offer some pretty good things. I wanted to be a part of something not many are, I wanted to go to Iraq or Afganistan. And so on and so forth.
My opinion of the people? There's tons of different people, just like anywhere else in the world. Many asked for handouts, if you give them something, more come asking for more and more. And if you didn't give them everything they want, some put guilt on you. I once gave a 32oz bottle of water to each kids in a group of six, the oldest kept asking me for more but since we had to move on I said so and goodbye (In as broken arabic as I could muster). And he said "I'm sorry for you mister". But I understand that where we were, these people were living in what most of us would call poverty. Some were very grateful, never asked for anything and appreciated anything we gave. Two kids just down the street from out outpost always sat at their shack and waved to us. Others gave smiles and thumbs up if we threw them cold water during the day when we see them walking down the street. The Iraqi Army we dealt with were the same as the rest of the people, very mixed in how they acted. Some acted like they were part of a reality series when they came over to trade with us. Others try to swindle us for things they like. Hell, one pointed to everything I owned and asked for it as a souvenir. Maybe just a little Iraqi humor. I am a Heavy Equipment operator, one of my pieces of gear is a front end loader. When I used the forks on it and took out boxes of trash to the burn pit, I've seen IA's running out, into a burning burn pit to try to find any goodies. I'm pretty open to meeting other cultures, probably more so than many Americans. I would have really liked to interact more with the people than I was able to. Some seemed very intresting, others were funny, and others I just wanted to understand a little better.
I didn't get a chance to sit down and interact with them much. I spoke with some of the IA's often in certain places, but we don't sit down and start talking politics. I'm not anywhere near fluent in Arabic, nor are many of them in English, so conversation wasn't every too satisfying. Some families did offer us tea, or "chi" as they call it over there. One man who's farm lost it's water supply when insurgents planted an IED in the culvert that brought water to his home. We had to fill it with concrete, until a few weeks later when it could be fixed properly. So in the mean time we gave him a truck full of water (1800 gallons) for his irrigation system.
