Time to think beyond work and housework!

Hi, my name is Mary Frame and I have recently retired from full-time work so now have the time to ponder on questions that have occasionally ocurred to me but that I have not had the time to fully explore for possible answers. So I started looking either for the answers, where someone else had already posed the questions, or somewhere I could ask myself. I joined this forum after reading some of the posts and finding myself interested in lots of them and quite amused by some of the answers, the ones that were, I think, intended to be funny, at least I hope they were! I'm not a scientist but have always been interested in lots of different things and I just hope that now I've found somewhere I can ask all those questions and perhaps get answers. Here's hoping I'll get to know you all soon, regards, Mary.

Welcome to the Sciforums. I trust that you will enjoy your time here with us. :)

Welcome! Glad to have you.

I'm old enough to have retired (69) but all I'd do is sit at my computer all day. I do that anyway and they pay me for it, so it seems like a better deal. :)

Hello Mary and welcome to the forum. I look forward to your posts and any ideas or questions you will bring for discussion. :)

1001 Arabian Nights

Hi Mary, are you familiar with Bucky Fullers Scherhazade reviewing of 1001 Aarbian Nights story in his book Synergetics 1?

7 * 11 * 13 = 1001. He has quite a story-line to go with it. I can't post links to it yet.

There is operation with calculator to fool your friends. Have them pick a 3 digit number ex 538 and repeat it to make it a six digit number ex. 538538.

While doing this put your hand to your forehead and pretend your accessing the beyond to figure out their number.

Next ask them to divide there number by either 7, 11 or 13 but don't let on you know these numbers ahead of time. So do this with each of those three prime numbers 7, 11 and 13 iin any sequence.

After they have divided with all three of those primes there original three numbers there original 3 digit number has returned.

Here is quote for a page...."Good Luck or Bad Luck? 1.Have someone secretly select a three-digit number and enter it twice into her calculator. (For example: 123123) Have her concentrate on the display. You will try to discern her thoughts!
2.From across the room (or over the phone), announce that the number is divisible by 11. Have her verify it by dividing by 11.
3.Announce that the result is also divisible by 13. Have her verify it.
4.Have him divide by his original three-digit number.
5.Announce that the final answer is 7.
You can use this to predict Good Luck for him. If you wish to predict Bad Luck, have him divide by 7 in step 3; the final answer will be 13.

Why does this work? Entering a three-digit number twice (123123) is equivalent to multiplying it by 1001. (123 x 1001 = 123,123). Since 1001 = 7 x 11 x 13, the six-digit number will be divisible by 7, 11, 13, and the original three-digit number.'
