"Tiassa" and other names needing pornounciation guides. . .

I start with Tiassa, because I had a discussion with another member how to properly pronounce this name.

I thought it was "tee-AH-sah" and she thought it was "Tee-YAH-zah [with the "YAH" pronounced like the American "yeah"].

So which is correct?

Also, I remember member Kadark/Qadark. I always imagined his name being pronounced "keh-DARK" (or kə-DARK").

Then there's Dywyddyr which I imagine being pronounced "DEE-wih-DEAR".

Any others?

You are correct

The former. There is a guide in the old Ace paperbacks like Jhereg, and, apparently, a more complete one in the Book of Jhereg, which complies three of Brust's Taltos (tahl-tohsh) novels.

See also David Dyer-Bennet's pronunciation guide at Dragaera.info.

Well, I've been corrected for reffering to "Bent-HE-man" before.

I think I've read where Dywyddyr has put the pronunciation in a post before. It seems like it was not at all what my American brain would construe those letters to sound like together..Yiddish, perhaps?

Dywyddyr:
being a Welsh(-ish) word it's not as as easy as DEE-wih-DEAR.

The y is pronounced as an i, the w as u (oo), d is fricative (closer to t) and dd is th.
So it's tioo (like Tiw the Norse god - Tuesday, not quite chew) ith ir.

Tiu-ith-ir.

Keep practising. :p

Omg!

What i do when i cannot pronounce a name is make my own pronuncuation and stick with it. That is why i always spell that persons name as Dwydder. Pronounced Dwy-der. There is no such thin as y before w so how the hell can i pronounce that name?

No such thing?
Ah, my mistake. And the mistake of every Welsh-speaking person also.
In Welsh adjoining vowels are common. Ae, ai, aw, ew, iw, oe, oi, ou, wy and yw are the usual forms and are pronounced as the two separate sounds, with, generally, the stress on the first.
"Cartref yw cartref, er tloted y bo."
"Cyw a fegir yn uffern, yn uffern y myn fod."

You may be ignorant of certain things, but there's little to no requirement to parade that ignorance so often or so visibly.

We are talking about English. yw is U therefore if writign that is english it would be Du...
If you'd actually read my post you'd see we AREN'T talking about English. And I did give an equivalent English pronunciation: Tuesday - similar sound to "chew".
YW, as explained in the first link, is NOT "u".
And in English it wouldn't be "du" because that would omit the "i" from the diphthong.

Here's a tip for you, never play a Welshman at scrabble. ;)

LLWGYYLLLTLTLTLYYLLLL - er, yeh, that says "cat" mate. :p

Dywyddyr is a hard name to read; even harder to understand the pronunciation.

To say my name, all you have to do is clear your throat.

What? "Ahem" is pronounced Hrrrrk-ptui! ? :D

But what I really want to know is: WTF is a "pornounciation guide. . ."?
Maybe I'm looking at the wrong parts of teh interweb. :p

Noooo. Not so harsh. In your throat, gently go
{{{a-aah-mmm}}}
No hocking. No spitting.

I am unable to direct you to a porn ounciation guide. Have you tried an international search engine?

I was playing Kuma Wars once, and on there players can use microphones rather than type, and you would be amazed at how many people called me "col-len-el" Sanders. One kid, I kid you not, called me "colonial" sanders. So now I spell it like it is now. ^_^

Syzygys sounds like a New Zealander at a barbecue..."Eh bro, c'me ind geert ya syzygys while thee'ya stull hot."
