I thought it was common knowledge that Edison was an utter prig. To the other, what, exactly, is the ethical or moral proposition here? Or are we organizing a Justice for Elephants group? Capital punishment is bad because Edison was a bastard?

The elephant experiment was grotesque,
but people may have found it an entertaining spectacle.
We have come a long way in animal welfare since then.
I shouldn't think that he did it because he hated cats and elephants,
he just did not see their pain and fear as a concern.
In China, today, people are entertained by watching live cows being
killed by tigers in zoos. They also feed them live chickens, but if you can afford a cow you are quite the big guy.
People bring their children, and it is a fun day out.
No-one there sees a problem with it.
