I think my eyes might've glazed over a bit reading that, can someone with more brains than I clarify the theory behind this. Basically the idea is that every time the virus replicates itself, there will be a new error in its DNA that will eventually cause a collapse that'll kill it entirely?

You got it.
There seems to be an inherent danger though that the host cells also incorporates KP-1461. They say it's readily proofread.. but it doesn't seem entirely safe to me.
