Who do you think was the worst and best politicians of the last 100 years:

Best- Stalin(USSR), Hitler(Germany), Trudeau(Canada), Kennedy(USA), Clinton(USA), Putin(Russia), Battle(Uruguay), Churchill(UK), Ataturk(Turkey), Nehru(India), Tito(Yugoslavia), Kohl(W.Germany), DeGaulle (France), Vargas(Brazil).

Worst- Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Brezhnev (USSR), Ford (USA), Bush's (USA), Saddam (Iraq), Mulrony (Canada), Videla (Argentina), Shah (Iran), Mao (China), Kim's (NK), Tojo (Japan), Sharon (Israel), Arafat (Palestine).

That's all I can think of now, who to you is the best and worst?

Specify. Do you want the most evil politicians or those that made the worst mistakes? Do you want the leader who was best for his country or was the best person.

Someone can do great things for their country but can raze other countries to the ground. Some can be veritable saints (yeah, hard to imagine) and make mistakes that end with the soil running with blood. Some do horrible things in the belief that it is necessary. Some do good thing with a selfish purpose. Sometimes things just happen that they couldn't control but gets them scorned or blessed anyways.

Worst: Stalin/USSR
This nipper almost lost a nation ten times the size of its invader back in double-ya double-ya Two. If not for the Western bailout he would have come to terms with Germany and forked over the Ukraine, Byellorussia, Georgia, etc, etc.
In the post war era, he carried the "revolutionary" policies of his predecessor to lunatic extremes which cost the USSR an incalculable "brain drain", as well as terrorizing anyone capable of managing it to flee the environs of the Soviet Union and its satelite nations.

Runner Up: Hitler/Nazi Germany
After staging a masterful comeback from a failed attempted revolution, this mini-mustachio'd miscreant used his position of power to drive his nation into the most destructive war in its history... while it was run by arguably the least capable men to maintain such a massive and sustained effort

Best:Franklin Delano Roosevelt/USA
This snobby society cousin of Teddy (was it cousin? correct please if wrong) managed to force down the America's depression-drained craw the stinking socialist medicine which was (sadly) exactly what was needed to jump-start its vitality in the '30s, and declared that it would disgorge an Arsenal of Democracy for the world to beat back the Axis menace in WW2.
He was willing to do what had to be done at a time when procedural technicalities had to take a back seat to resolute leadership.

Runner Up:Winston Churchill/Great Britain
Stubby here made a comeback of his own after the disaster of the Galipoli raid (his baby) in WW1 to rise to lead Britain against Nazi Germany in WW2, and labored tirelessly to save the Isle of the Mighty from oblivion.

Best : Worst

Ghandi : Stalin

The motivations and egos of these two who first come to mind for me, were considerably different from each other.

Clockwood

The politicians you can pick are up to you as to why. I set no standard, I just want to see whom and why. :D

How was Ghandi the best politician ever? Was he elected or appointed by vote? Which is not the same thing... he had no opposition. This is like who was the bigger Messiah: Jesus or Joe Christ? C'mon! No one had a chance in comparison.

Stalin became Lenin's boy, intercepted the Testimate from Lenin, it never really did go to the Central Committee and then knocked Trotsky & Co. to become Supreme Leader. He spread his arms like an octopus through the administrative and intelligence network of the USSR. It wasn't so much elections as powerplays that made him great.

Possibly the best politician is Celopatra. She seduced two, count 'em two, Roman Emperors and saved Egypt in the process. Without her Egypt would have been a Roman colony much much earlier than it was. She rode into Egypt from Syria, kicked her sister's ass and then took over. Not too shabby.

Indeed that is why I didn't put Ghandi, he was never in power (nominally at least). That's why I put Nehru instead.

If I understand the history correctly, Ghandi earned, wielded, and continues to have significant political influence- and he did so effectively and responsibly. I don't see titles or longevity as valid criteria for positive political impact.

Perhaps grist for another interesting thread are reasons why democracies so often fail to elect qualified and responsible leaders.

Well I thought "politicain" rather than statesman or leader. Politican, at least to me, means how well they work the electorate as well as the legislature.

In Stalin's case there was no electorate, but there was one hell of a legislature. What Stalin did was wrong, but the way he attained power was quite skillfull.

The real one that everyone has missed is Cleopatria. The real story is amazing, she was cunning as any man or woman ever. She used sex in a rather noble way to save her nation. She definately wasn't "Caesar's Whore."

...

What's so bad about Mussolini? Other than invading Africa and being Hitler's whore, he was the only guy in history who could make the trains run on time.

What's so bad about Mussolini?

Ehm... Hitler's biatch (when Hitler didn't like the guy), invading hapless nations alas Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Somalia. Failing at invading the Balkans, failed against the British at sea, in the air, failed in N.Africa, drained the Germans of valuable men and machines. He failed at essentially what was his reason d'etre as the fascist leader, to create a viable Italian Empire. But I have to admit, he did a pretty good job with those trains.

If you are using good as in good at what they did-- politics, then surely

Best: Clinton

Worst: None exists

Good as in good deeds, or the like...

Best and unparralled: Ghandi
Worst: Stalin

Hitler as politician: Genius, best there ever was.
Hitler as militarist: terrible.

Mussolini played the Church and the Communists against eachother, but he had no clue how to conduct a war.

So much for that New Roman Empire.
