The Shakespeare of our Time?

If you had to say anyone of the last 100 years was the Shakespeare of our time, who would you say it is?

Who would we compare in terms of social insight and understanding of human nature (for that, beyond the beautiful writing, is what Shakespeare is reveered for)? My pick would definetly be Woody Allen. That guy does EVERYTHING for his movies, writes books and is an amazing insight into humanity. Brilliant and funny, a great mix.

I know I sometimes harp on but in terms of social insight I'd have to say Terry Pratchett.
Lots of people get put off by the witches and goblin etc but oncce you look past them it's plain he's talking about us.
A very very funny man.

Gets my vote :D

The writers of Days Of Our Lives. I'm not a Shakespeare fan really. He wrote tacky soap operas for the masses, with the goal of making money, and every episode was the same.

There are far more writers and composers working today than at the time of the great classic writers and composers. Most of today’s writers are better educated and have much better mentoring opportunities. So why are the classical writers and composers held in such high regard as compared to modern artists?

Shakepeare is the greatest playwright of all time.
No, that is not flamebait.

Yes. But that is not all he did. He had the bitchingest gift for language and the best characters.

Today's Shakespeare? Chekhov, FitzG, Joyce?
