The Orville , series

It's a good show.
It's . . . odd. It started off as a parody of Star Trek and is now becoming Star Trek. Same characters, same aesthetic on set design, same story arcs, same view of the future, same gadgets, same stories . . heck, even some of the same actors. It's like it wants to be a direct copy of Star Trek but they can't _quite_ go that far without running into copyright issues.

Yep. My friend likes to say "It's like Star Trek - if it were crewed by regular nerds like you & me and the rest of us - with our dirty jokes, pranks and shenanigans."

Pretty sure that's what Seth was going for: Star Trek but for rlz.

Yes

My favorite show is in season 1 , Mad Idolatry .

I like it. It's like Star Trek with swearing and characters who are more flawed and therefore more relatable.

Having said that, it is very derivative of Star Trek. It wouldn't really be needed if the makers of Star Trek made its characters more 3 dimensional. It could be a fight to the death between the two. :)

I also like how The Orville explores contemporary social issues by analogy. There have a been quite a few episodes that can be appreciated at a superficial or at a deeper level.

I've watched season 1.
It's a reverential and humourous ribbing of Star Trek. Similar to Galaxy Quest in many ways. Almost too close to ST, with an intro that looks like a rejected opening for Voyager.
Because it's being played in a casual manner and often for laughs, when the jokes and central conceit don't work it has to rely on the episode's plot, which can make it feel lightweight and a tad insubstantial.

But still good overall, just not as good as I had hoped it would be, though. But will watch season 2.
