Simple question:
Given enough time, is it possible to learn and remember everything?

Truth:

If you are the flirty kind, no.
A dilettane, more like fuck no.

But if you feel learning strikes you like a mania- most likely.
And I mean everything.

Well, even if you could learn everything: How and when could you TEST it? How and when would you use/show your knowledge?
How and when would you know that you do know everything?

Howvere we know that the capacity is finite so I would imagine NO. We cannot possibly learn everything in the universe at this time.

I don't know. But let me tell you what I do know from experience. With given time, you can ferget almost everything and that sometimes (after exam) feals great :)

Enslave thyself to Jeopardy.

Given this confidence, take thyself away to solitude and try thy hand at a philsophy of nothing. If you can quote yourself and manage to force the opposite sex into submission on your ugly day, then you know you know everything.

Invert:
It's not even possible for the human brain to fully encompass the concept of everything.
Yes you can, I've seen it.

'Everything' resembles Cher with no hair.

Weeeiiiirrrrdd.... :D

I guess we can't really get to an answer here, eh?
I would say there's a limit. But I would love to know how much is the limit.... ;)

Btw... I heard that a few people know around 50 languages. That might give an idea of how much we can handle?
And also, we only use a little portion of our brain. What would happen if we would use 100% of it? ;)

you mean, speculatively, the capcity is finite. we don't really even know that for certain.

I suspect the notion that human heads are generally finite in dimension (Gendanken excepted :) ) suggests that the organ therein is bounded on all sides.

Unless of course you keep your brain elsewhere...

the capacity limits of the human brain are currently unknown.

I agree. Maybe the brain has no limits on information storage, maybe it does. Really, it is impossible to tell. Since we can not comprehend simple things like eternity, perhaps the brain is not that powerful.

No, I recommend u read the book The hidden face of God by Gerald L. Schroeder. In it, he states that the brain is contains a finite amount of cells and even atoms and so it is limited in the number of bits of information it can hold. There is a very interesting chapter on our limitations!

Think of your brain as a car that you're driving. It's nice and sunny out and you're driving down a straight road. You certainly don't need your blinkers on, windshield wipers, lights, heater, defroster... When it's hot outside you use your A/C, not your heater.

Your brain is the same way, it only uses certain parts of the cerebral cortex to complete a given task. Ex. When speaking you don't use your orbital lobe to complete the task, you use your brochas (sp) speech.

I think the figures of how much of your brain you use are not valid. Your brain has more functions than just being "you". "You" just fit into the small part of the brain that is "used." All you are is a socialization unit, a rationalization unit.

It is possible that the "you" could expand and take over other areas of the brain, superseding their functions, but that would take a lot of effort. And would slow down reaction times and efficiency. When one performs complex tasks, the brain always strives to make the action unconscious. To the point where you can do it in your sleep so to speak. That way your "thoughts" don't interfere. It would most likely also burn more energy. Forcing you to burn more calories to feed the ineficiency of conscious thought. Could be the weight loss plan of the future.

edit: Gendanken, I'm trying to visualize which is worse. I'm equally repulsed by both images. Is it in this paradox that "everything" lies?

That would be impossible for information changes second by second. So in order to keep up with all of the changes your brain would fry because it could never keep up.

I'd say no. While your mind remembers everything it sees that does not mean you can recall certain information whenever needed. There is simply too much to learn. I do remember hearing of a strange case where a man had a disorder and the disorder was that he could not forget.

He simply remembered everything, even the minute albeit useless details. While you'd think that would be freaking awesome, actually it was the exact opposite. He could not even hold a simple conversation without his mind being flodded with useless information and memories, he would just daze in and out of conversations. A psychiatrist describe him as "a rather dull human being".

I have his name and case story lying around but am too lazy to look it up.
