Ten poignant movies about suicide

Suicide is still a rather taboo topic these days, a subject so troubling and perplexing that it is seldom broached in casual conversation or even entertainment and news media. One thing that strikes me about it is the terrible loneliness that accompanies it, as if the one considering it feels they are the last person on earth. In this age of technological connectivity, how do people ever get that lonely? And when it happens, it devastates the lives of those who love and know us. Here are 10 films that dare to explore the topic of suicide and its catastrophic effects on those around us. I would add to the list the profoundly gripping 1986 film " 'night mother" in which Sissy Spacek's character argues with her mother played by Anne Bancroft one night about ending her own life by morning. No spoilers. Just see it.

"There are a lot of issues that modern movie audiences come into contact with in their daily lives that are often shied away from in movie-making, and for understandable reasons. Anyone whose life has been touched in any way by suicide can probably tell you a lot more about it than your average movie, as in films it’s like a subject to be glossed over as quickly as possible. It’s hard to talk about, it’s hard to think about, people don’t agree about it, and it’s easy to get wrong, even when artists are well-intentioned.

But we’ve made up a list of ten films that took the time and care to approach the subject sensitively, and really give an honest look at a tragedy that society must constantly reckon with, showing not only how it relates to the victim, but how it affects those left behind."
