Looks like a Sphinx or Swallowtail caterpillar, but I don't know what species.

Ok, it's a Puss Moth caterpillar (Cerura vinula).
Beautiful caterpillar..

Apparently, they can discharge formic acid. Did the one you saw do that ?

Lol it might have attacked the g/f. We were trying to get him out of the bushes to take his pic so the g/f pulled up the plant he was on and it came out of the ground to fast he flew though the air and landed on her foot, she screamed; I laughed. Maybe she was attacked.
