Steorn Orbo Pulse Motor - No back EMF?

Hello Everyone,

These folks in Ireland must be drinking too much Guinness.

They claim to have came up with a pulse motor that does not experience back EMF.

Here is a link to their talk.

Introduction to an Orbo Electromagnetic Interaction - Part 1

h_t_t_p_://_w_w_w_.youtube._com/watch?v=S5nae_I_Mus

In the video they show scope traces which seem to show that under a load the current/voltage of their system remains the same.

When I went to college I learned that all motors experience a back EMF.

There must be a back EMF in their system somewhere.

It's worse than that. The Orbo motor supposedly puts out more energy than is needed to run it. In other words, it is a perpetual motion machine - ruled out by the 1st law of thermodynamics.

The chances of the Orbo motor living up to its claims are approximately zero.

And besides that, the Orbo people already have a bad reputation that they cannot escape from (except for people like the OP who may not be aware of what I'm about to point out).

Around three years (or so) ago, they scheduled a promotional show in London for an earlier version of an over-unity device. It was heavily promoted and drew a lot of attention. The demonstration could be viewed in person or live through the Internet.

Then comes the fateful day: Hundreds of people are present and untold thousands are watching the live TV feed on their computers and cell phones. They connect it to a power source - supposedly to jump-start it - and it spins up. The moment they remove the power connection it promptly dies.

Their explanation? A special bearing had failed - due, they claimed - to the intensity of the bright lights needed for the TV cameras. There was no spare on hand, they said, and would have to return to their shop in Ireland to make another.

And that was THE last word heard from them - until how. I suppose they thought people would forget their previous failure and now have built an entirely different second device. And the Dummies weren't even smart enough to change the name of the original device OR the company name! Orbo by Steorn! :D:D

What a bunch of loosers!!!!!!

if the motor has coils of wire in it then it generates back EMF, end of story.

edit:
since they claim its pulsed then it's guaranteed to generate back EMF.
a moving magnetic field is what generates the back EMF in the first place.
there is no better way of creating a moving field than by pulses.

If it is generating back EMF then shouldn't the traces be changing as the system accelerates and decelerates? The traces on an ordinary pulse motor do. If they do not shouldn't that indicate something odd is taking place?

there is no if about this.
the only way back EMF is not generated is if the coils are fed DC and the motor doesn't turn.
as soon as the motor starts turning it WILL generate back EMF unless they have found a way to build a motor without magnets and coils of wire.

As I said earlier, this company has an established history of making quack claims about it's "inventions." If anyone still has any doubts about their scam/craziness, all you need to do is read their history here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steorn

Another "talk" with additional experiments have been posted.

Steorn's Orbo Electromagnetic Interaction COP is greater than 1. Part 1 of 5

Anyone going to the demo by any chance?

I would like to ask some questions.

That's a really great excuse, you must confess! But, it's a coverup. It was actually camera-shy. They came out with the bright lights thingy to spare the bearing some embarrassment.

One wonders how they are staying afloat. The wikipedia article says they're in the hole, financially speaking. Do they just believe in themselves that much?

No, in fact I would be very surprised if they believed in themselves at all, but I imagine many other credulous people do, and that's how you make money on this sort of thing.

There are certainly people out there who take this stuff seriously. There is no doubt in my mind that 'perpetual motion' is possible in some form or other.

Oh, really? Despite the fact that not one shred of physical science agree with you? And in fact, the laws of physics clearly state that it's impossible?

Please demonstrate to us what basis you have for having no doubt.

What do you mean by perpectual motion? If you mean a device that can move a really lonbg time, then I agree, and it's all down to semantics and "how long is too long". If you mean motion that is actually perpetual, then of course I disagree. Even if there is only a 1 in 1000 chance per year of a machine grinding to a halt, there is still a better than 60% chance it will stop at some point in 1000 years.

If you mean it produces more energy than oit takes to run it, then I don't see the source of yoiur faith.

Laws of physics have been broken and broken again, I don't see why thermo is any different.

Truly perpetual motion is not possible as far as I know., but the second law can be broken, meaning heat can be recycled ad infinitum. However, along with the possibility that the machine will break you also have the problem of heat leakage. There is no perfect insulator and so the machine will slowly lose heat until it equalizes with cosmic background radiation, which is also getting colder.

And just how, pray tell, can heat be recycled endlessly in a closed system?

You contradict yourself in the same paragraph. Amazing!

Never mind - I don't need anything at all from a crackpot.

If I like I would design a microbe which would drain the heat from your planet to leave you shivering in your abode. Its power tenfold, it would eat all nutrients, consume all CO2, and become the dominant life form of this earth, all the while its genomes would diversify as the chromosomes cracked and then recracked in the icy waters of this earth.

Yeah, just like I said - a crackpot. And still a lowly student at that. Please don't drop out of school - you need it badly!!

Steorn has posted two more videos!

I like how the output energy trace can go up or down (when the pick up coil is moved) but the input trace stays the same.
