The stomach has ridges that help grind up food. The sound you hear is these ridges moving against each other. The stomach makes grinding motions when it expects to get food, or you're hungry.

Its involuntary, they just start moving in anticipation of getting food.

I checked, the sound from the stomach signaling hunger is caused by the contractions of the empty stomach, and as the rugae folds and gastric juices and gases mix around, a growling sound is produced. this is caused by the lack of certain nutrients in the blood, and the brain sends hormones signaling the stomach to digest food for more nutrients, but there is nothing in the stomach, thus producing the sound.

however this is only one of the theories made on this subject, this is still an ongoing study, many theories are still being proposed and tested
