Sky rings! What are they?

"Think"? There is no "think" here. They are what they are and what they are is sunlight refracted through ice crystals.

This thread is in the wrong forum; it is astronomy, not pseudoscience.

There is no "think" here

Obviously...;)

No, we're not talking rings around the sun. These are totally different. If you'd actually look at the video examples you'd see this.

My mistake, I assumed you were referring to the ring "sighting" that made national news yesterday.

That video looks to be a mixture of lightning, smoke, clouds and hoaxes.

Spot on, Russ. So Russ, did you really think that Magical Realist was refering to an real phenomena? That is a true alternative theory! ;)

Lightning, smoke and clouds sound like real phenomena to me. Are you saying all these videos are hoaxed? Gimme a break!

These are really fascinating. What do you think they are? Ignore the first clip. I don't know what it was showing. Go to 1:46. The remaining clips are simply astonishing. And the last one may change your view of reality.

Not really.

They can be created in a variety of ways (all explosive). All you need is a still day with no wind.

"It's just a very cool effect made usually by a device which goes by many names: smoke ring generator, smoke cannon or vortex cannon," Hansen told The Huffington Post in an email. "The construction usually involves a pipe on a stand that is filled with a combustible liquid, like gasoline, kerosene or other oil and a pressurized gas, such as propane, which explodes expanded gases through the pipe nozzle."

Hansen explained how this same effect has been used for years at art and music festivals, such as the annual Burning Man event in Nevada.

"It takes a calm day with no wind for the ring to stay hovering in the air for a lengthy time," Hansen wrote. "But when it does, it's quite impressive."

HuffPost also reached out to Marc Dantonio, chief photo and video analyst for the Mutual UFO Network, to get his take on the U.K. aerial black ring. He agrees with Hansen.

"The black ring is not an ET event -- 100 percent sure," Dantonio told HuffPost in an email. "That is a phenomenon caused by a pipe that shoots a charge of propane or gasoline straight up. Because the fireball was symmetric around the upward facing pipe, you get a symmetric spherical fireball at first. As the fireball extinguishes itself, the ring forms from the turbulent upward rising air and the smoke continues to be drawn up in the rising heat column.

"As the center dissipates from being accelerated through the middle, the outside remains relatively intact."

They could both be right. According to the Leamington Spa Courier, a spokesperson for the nearby medieval Warwick Castle suggested that the smoke ring was the result of some pyrotechnics in use at the historic castle's attractions.

The latest one in the UK in the last few weeks was the result of a new fireworks display:

The mystery surrounding a giant black smoke ring over Warwick appears to have been solved.

As previously reported, the strange phenomenon was captured on film by 16-year-old Georgina Heap on Friday night.

It hung in the air for several minutes, before evaporating into nothing.

Theories have included a swarm of insects to a home-made smoke signal, but now it seems it was the result of a new pyrotechnic show being tested at nearby Warwick Castle.

A castle spokesman said: “As part of our 1,100th anniversary celebrations this year, we’ve been testing a number of fire effects to enhance our daily Trebuchet Fireball Spectacular show – the world’s largest firing catapult.

“We’ve seen a number of different effects including the vortex images that have been reported.”

Anyone who lives on the Gold Coast in Queensland Australia, within the vicinity of Movie World (a theme park) often see the same thing twice a day if there is no wind, from the fireworks used in one of their outdoor stunt shows.

If you don't believe that, then it's a giant smoking a giant cigarette blowing smoke rings into the air... :D

That might explain the black smokey ones. But what about the others that are white and high up in the atmosphere? What about those huge rings filmed in the clouds? And what about that last one that looks like the Eye of Sauron or something? There's more going on here than just fireworks.

:bugeye:

Huh?

Ermm it's a vortex ring.

The white ones can be caused by white smoke or by steam.. And are often seen around airports during air shows and at high altitudes because they are made by planes - hell your video shows one of them occurring over an airport runway. They can also be created by volcanoes...

That's pretty much all there is to them.. Nothing more than that.

Did you see the 911 call on the sun?

I thought the guy getting hit by lightning twice was the best part of that video.
