Should we go to Mars?

Mars no. Too little return on investment. Let our unborn great grandchildren do Mars. We should spend our science dollars on making sure that our unborn great grand children have a decent socio-economic environment in which to live.

Lets teach(genetically modify) Algae to make oil. Let's build dikes around Bangledesh and Florida for global warming induced rising sea waters. It is too late to stop Global warming so let's prepare for it. Let's improve water desalination technology. Let's create better technology for electric car batteries.

Well said! :)

I agree with nirakar, not for this generation, or the next. We have more important short term scientific problems to solve, or there won't be any long term for humanity.

Our problem is that we still are harbored to Earth. We already lack resources...the environment is erratic...we need to be able to have backup location to live. And it must be done in this century the 21st century is when it shall be done, and it will be done. And we will be on Mars before this decade is over.

A bigger problem is that don't live in harmony with this planet. We need to solve energy, food and pollution problems first.
You won't find a better suited planet to human life than Earth.

Oh, and humans be on Mars this decade, don't be ridiculous! For now robots are doing everything we need.

If we don't solve those problems first and don't achieve sustainable development on Earth, how do you suppose are we going to do that on a barren rock, that Mars is?

So let's waste them on a stupid dream. But why Mars, why not the Moon?

We should be happy if most of humankind survives the next 100 years. If there is a big calamity, we don't need the Mars anymore because there will be plenty of room for humans here on Earth....

I see as this...Earth is a battlefield of human civilization, the human variable keeps increasing...the population will have to sustain itself, wars have a possibility of wiping us all out, we need to be able to create self sustaining habitats anywhere. Mars is the best place to start doing this because it has everything we need to live if we utilize it properly. Why not the moon? It is too close to Earth...a conflict on Earth has an easy chance of escalating to the moon. Also the moon...even with soil extraction just does not have what people need, yes it got helium 3 for energy and yes it seems to have water ice in small amounts, but all this is extremely scarce.

I just feel that there were other seeds of life across the galaxies like us and some people like me said lets go to space and expand before we kill ourselves of or get killed by environment and some said why bother and lets solve our own problems. Well wars are never going away, there is a conflict on every continent now. There are nukes that can destroy Earth 6 times over what is needed. ...so why not do the right thing and give our civilization a chance?

I said..."habitable"...closest to Earth as in terms of habitable and has an environment system.

No, you didn't say "habitable", besides, since the Moon is closer to Earth, it's a lot more habitable due to the ease of getting supplies there.

p.s. There are at least 6 civilizations on Earth.

from Earth...supplies from Earth. The goal here is to create an in-situ life supporting system anywhere we wish to live.

You are really so inept?
1. If we go somewhere else, do you think our psychological problems will remain on Earth?
2.For fucks sake, what are you going to eat on Mars if you don't develop technology how to grow food there beforehand?

1. we will have problems anywhere we go...but if we remain on Earth these problems will overcome us and we can go extinct with much higher probability than if we would have expanded to space

2. There are already enough studies done for life supporting system utilized on Mars. Mars has all the resources need to grow food, the technology exists already.

1. I don't buy that. Besides we can't expand anywhere, we don't have the technology any way.

2. Prove it.

1. YES WE DO HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY

2. I DID RESEARCH MYSELF

-----
1)

we have the rockets to go to space, we have ISS that is sustained...if you look at ISS cycle the only problem that is happening there is that they dont utilize the plants to recycle the CO2 and get rid of the waste...well couple of other problems as well. Yeah we lack technology to do it, and that is why we need to invest MUCH more into space and space research to get that technology.

What?! Mars is our hope to expand to space. It is time to leave Earth comfort and be space civilization.

Don't worry. Mars is an inevitable destination in the human course of [future] history. No matter what the conservatives may say now.
