Applied Cryptography is a very good book.
For a look at the role codes and ciphers played in important historical events, as well as technical explanations of historic ciphers and an analysis of the development and evolution of codes, I would strongly recommend Code Book: The Science of Secrecy from Ancient Egypt to Quantum Cryptography by Simon Singh.

If you write each page number from every seventh page of the bible and then when all along side each other put a line after every fourth number the first three numbers are the page of the bible you look up and the fifth number is the paragrah in which you copy down on to paper when you complete this task you then the delete/put a line through, every eleventh word you then will have found the secret code of codes!
