Science is not a perfect institution

Buddha1 said:
As for using the things given by science, there is no other way left for us to do. We live in a society which has been made highly dependant on technology --- there is no escape. But I do try to limit the harm they cause (e.g. I don't use air-conditioners).

Yet you spout lies on the internet. And what exactly is the problem with air conditioners? They consume electricity? (No, they don't produce CFCs)

Buddha1 said:
And while, science may cure some of the diseases that were incurable before, it has given us more diseases than we ever would have without the technology which has ruined our environment. It has made our lives much hell than it was ever before.

Given that there is no evidence for this ridiculous claim, it will always remain the opinion of an uneducated hater such as yourself.
Do you even know where most cancerous cells come from?
Bet you wouldn't even vaccinate your own children.

The quote is well in place. One day science and technology will make our planet lifeless too! Unless we change the concept of science with something which flows with nature not seeks to exploit it.

You've just proved you have absolutely know idea what the field of environmental science is - and what its main aims are.

That's indeed a very, very scientific approach.

Although I do feel bad about your health!

I don't lie! I'd rather keep quiet, if I can't reveal the truth.

I can be mistaken about somethings, but then everyone can be.

However, there are little chances of me being mistaken on the issues that I raise on this forum. Because I have studied and analysed those issues more than the average man. I may be against the popular or the powerful view, but that does not make me necessarily mistaken.

If I'm mistaken the best recourse is to clear things by being logical and using evidences (whether or not supported by outside links). That all of you pseudo-scientific guys (including Ophiolite!), use unscientific methods so exclusively, and refrain from using scientific methods to discuss --- and only complain, abuse and troll, proves that you are on the wrong side of the truth.

And when you're on the wrong side of the truth. Being scientific can be hazardous!

I'm sure its great. But I cannot do everything in this world. I can raise my concern about it. I can do everything I can in my personal capacity. But if you want me to do a course about everything that I'm concerned about, you're asking for too much.

Of course science is not perfect, thats the whole idea, its constantly under revision.

I would like to point out that as a Humanist I also care about preserving animal species, animal rights, and preserving and caring about the environment, and not destroying the only world we have.
Ok, I might still eat meat and I'm not exactly an animal liberation activist, but I'm do
think we need to cut down pollution, mistreatment of animals, unneccessary destruction of the environment etc.
America's wars for oil disgusts me and one day when we run out we might all be fucked unless some SCIENTISTS come up with a better energy solution than fossil fuels!!!

Speaking of animals, a lot of eastern medicine is derived from animal parts - some of which are endangered!
E.g. tiger penis is thought to be an aphrodisiac by tiny dick morons who are willing to CONTINUE to kill endangered tigers so they can eat the penis.

Remember the abortion rate of female foetuses in many parts of china? Isn't it like 80% to 90% in some places?
Know about the "dying rooms" - where babies are left to die because they cannot be supported?

Know how china is developing a new hydro power plant thats gonna leave like A MILLION peasants homeless? I forget its name.

Any knowledge of the nuclear tests India and Pakistan carry out right next to (<5km from) villages full of people?
The country of Pakistan wallows in 3rd world poverty while its leaders spend so much on their nuclear weapons program. Because of a nuclear stand off based on.... wait for it..... RELIGION.

Make me google any of the atrocities I've just mentioned, I dare you.

You don't have to do "everything" in the world - but you can do more than raising your concern about it on the internet. If you can complain on a forum like this, you can join an animal rights/environmentalist organisation, go to a protest, sign a petition, whatever.

Why do you think it is too much (or beyond your capacity), for you to study the things you care about, so you can learn about them and make a positive contribution?
You've written more on this forum than you would need to write at university in a whole year!!

The problem is that the layman doesn't understand it and that the institution of science promotes itself as 'God'. That has resulted in it acquiring huge powers with which it can and does manipulate our society, rules people. Just like religion had once done.

As long as we understand that science is not perfect, it is not god and that it has several lacunaes --- and that scientists don't necessarily know everything.....things would be O.K., and we can live with science. There is no other way out. (although perhaps we can get back to the original, broader way of looking at things that included what we today called science.

If the resistance to this thread put up by some of those practising science (or those studying it) --- that is, those who are part of the scientific instition, is any indication --- then we do have a big problem, judging by their attitudes, who cannot take any criticism of their institution. That's an unhealthy sign, and evidence that such a topic needs to be taken up amongst the masses.

I don't support all that! You can create a thread to discuss that and I'll support you! But that still does not condone the 'scientific institution' whether in the east or west.

I keep telling you, don't try to digress from the topic of discussion here. That there are problems with the west has nothing to do with the problems with the institution of science.

All the negative things you've mentioned about the east have been either facilitated by science or helped increase to harmful levels by science.

Science is still the culprit. There is something wrong with the worldview of science, and we have already pointed it out.

Well, not a bad idea!

But I still think universities and courses limit your thinking --- and you still have to work with in the establishment. I like the freedom to think and work that being outside such an establishment provides. You need people both inside and outside the establishments.

I've seen how establishments are. They told me, they agree with what I was saying, but cannot put that in the publication they were sponsoring for my organisation --- because the society isn't ready to accept that! I'm talking about a UN organisation. My own government is worse!

In fact I would like to do a course in human gender and sexuality, although I think I know enough to teach them professors.

What can I do, whenever I present evidences, people run away like there's no tommorrow!

You present supposition, misinterpretation, guesswork, poor observation, imagination, and speculation as though it were properly researched, methodologically sound, peer reviewed evidence.

We don't run away. We go privately to a small room and vomit until we feel better. If this sounds harsh to you, try reading your nonsense from our perspective.

what a stupid quote

having fun bagging scientists while still using the internet, electricity, clean water, and safe in the knowledge that western medicine will cure you of most illnesses?

how many times do people have to tell you buddha that morality is a human characteristic, and has nothing to do with science?
Humans do science and should be morally aware of the consequences (good as bad).

Medicine is good of course, but atombombs is bad. For whatever reason should anyone have atombombs? Only if no one else has them. That is sorryfully not true.

Pardon me, but having been to a buddhist speech (i really liked it), i was under the impression that part of buddhism is about being humble, and trying to be a better person and improve yourself.
For someone who's nickname is not "buddhist", but "buddha1", you sure have what they call a big "ego". Assuming you could teach the professor?

Perhaps you could consider going to a Zen shrine and asking them to beat you with their sticks? That could take away your ego.

For "evidences" in the above quotation substitute "a series of unsupported statements representing personal opinion" and you've hit the bullseye.<P>

But then instead of hiding away why don't you analyse my suppositions, misinterpretations, guesswork, poor observation, etc., etc. and prove that they are as such and not 'evidences', as I claim!

Oh yeah! Then why does it always, always time with just when I present an evidence, or just when I win an argument?

What is your perspective --- a vested interest one?

Ego maybe a negative characteristic of me, but in that respect I am not different from any other man. The way straight men's world functions, having an ego sometimes becomes necessary for survival, for a lack of it is taken to be a weakness.

See, while I've tried to understand what is wrong with the world of men, I have not yet found the perfect solution, and to be able to stick around to find a solution, I have to keep my foothold in the straight world :) Which means that I cannot break all its rules at once!

But yes Ego is not a great quality and 'natural positive masculinity' has no place for it. Instead it is all about 'self-respect'.

Having said that, I do not think that the statement "I can teach the professors" is a hollow, bragging one! Male Gender and sexuality is one field where enough honest research or study has not been done (apart from a few haphazard misleading ones trying to find the cause of so-called 'homosexuality'). From all that I know of these courses and stuff, they strictly teach the established western view of male gender and sexualtiy --- seeing this world strictly from the point of view of 'sexual orientation', and dismissing 'gender orientation'. They will still have much to teach me though, as I can well analyse the facts given by them according to my own experience.

If there are courses that are willing to look at the issue beyond the misleading 'sexual orientation' model, I would be more than willing to follow that course.
