The article I read was in New Scientist but I googled this instead; 'Sasers' set to stun.
The maths for sound and light waves are nearly identical, and under the right circumstances it should be possible to create a coherent beam of sound waves..
They are beyond the hearing of any living thing. I have a hunch that this effect could be responsible for the 'magic' of human interaction for example.

Because light gets absorbed by matter. From reading of personal reports of ufo experiences, 'beams' travel through walls and cause nausea and disorientation etc. I think ultrasound/phonon boundary conditions are more likely since they are known to produce the same effects.
