Religion and Small Towns

Why is it that small towns are so illusioned by religion? I noticed how religious many are in small towns. The town I am in has several little churches. You can see religious signs on the road side with messages and such. This stuff is not seen often in large, metro areas.

Is this in the USA?

I know that in England most towns, villages, and hamlets have a church.
But in no way do they seem obsessed with religion.
I don't think I've ever seen a religious sign in my town.
