I'm thinking of doing R&D in AI. What salary should I expect to after I graduate? Either in Canada or US.

Is it too risky? Would it be better to just apply for some generic programming job? (ie. IT, Game development)

Huh?

This is disappointing. If you are thinking of doing research and development in any discipline and you're worried about your salary, you're all wrong already. Not to say that money isn't important, but to go so far as to ask "Would it be better to just apply for some generic programming job?", is disappointing.

Re: Huh?

Well by the time I graduate, I'm going to be in a hell of alot of depth. I want to make sure I can get out of it. Maybe my attitude will change by then :(

Get a PhD first and get an internship with Microsoft or IBM. Then decide where to go - like University or IBM. University is much safer from job cuts. Do your thesis on "Unstructured data". You will need it to work on AI.

I'm going to translate your quote for you . . .

Actually, "alot" is two words - "a lot".
